Through its academic project, UWC continues to play a leading role in helping to build an equitable and dynamic society in South Africa.The Department of Afrikaans/Nederlands hosted within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a leading teaching and research unit at the University of the Western Cape and delivers structured courses across the underlying disciplines of Sociolinguistics; Afrikaans Language Varieties; Black Afrikaans Studies; Language Professional Courses e.g. Translation, Editing, Journalism and Media Studies.The department seeks to appoint a Departmental Administrator to assist with all Departmental administrative procedures, to ensure alignment and compliance with central administrative systems and procedures.The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Academic administration and student administration;
  • Enquiry management;
  • Marks administration;
  • Committee administration;
  • Financial administration including budget administration and procurement;
  • Event/venue organisation:
  • Meeting/minutes administration;
  • Human resources administration;
  • Reception duties;
  • General administration and reporting including office administration, assisting document management, liaising with service providers, etc.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)Grade 12 and a relevant three-year post-matric qualification with two years relevant experience OR grade 12 with three to five years relevant experience in a Higher Education environment.Proficiency in computer software packages e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.Added advantage and preferences:
  • Administrative experience in a Higher Education environment as well as knowledge of student administration systems.
  • Experience with university procurement and financial management systems.
  • Proficiency in student marks administration and student administrative management systems.
Required competencies:
  • Demonstrated communication, organisational and interpersonal skills to engage with academics, students and service providers.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure, and to adhere to and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work without supervision and to pay attention to detail.
