Job Description


The Primary purpose of the role will be to provide Law Enforcement training, mentoring, and empowering capability to park-based Field Operations Managers, Heads of Law Enforcement, Park Instructors, and their Law Enforcement teams, through the delivery of basic, refresher leadership/mentoring and specialist training, according to African Parks Standard Operating Procedures and Law Enforcement training packages;

The role will also assist the African Parks Head of Law Enforcement in the continuous development and implementation of all Law Enforcement Standard Operating Procedures and training manuals.

Together with the African Parks Head of Law Enforcement, ensure LE program quality and compliance by conducting audits and/or by other means, including supervision of consultants and equipment reviews.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Conduct 3-week refresher leadership development and mentoring courses in all parks, 2-3 times per year, as both Chief Instructor and Course Manager:
  • Conduct weapons, and other specialist Law Enforcement training during refresher courses as required;
  • Ensure all training is done per the African Parks Law Enforcement training manuals and Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Provide reports for all training to the AP Head of Law Enforcement.
  • Work directly with Field Operation Managers, Park Head of Law Enforcement, and Park Instructors in park capability improvement planning and implementation.
  • Mentor and train Field Operation Managers, Park Head of Law Enforcement, Park Instructors, and Patrol Leaders in their respective work environments, including strategic and tactical guidance, as well as participation in extended operational patrols in the field.
  • Create and maintain course programs for all training packages to be provided as required;
  • Supervise outside consultants engaged to train AP personnel;
  • Review and provide LE equipment consultations, as needed.
  • Review and give feedback to Park Instructors on their reporting of Law Enforcement patrol leadership and junior rangers.
  • Attend and provide reports in quarterly African Parks Law Enforcement training meetings with the African Parks Head of Law Enforcement.
  • Create and maintain course programs for all training packages to be provided as required.
  • Liaise with and advise Field Operation Managers, Park Head of Law Enforcement, and Park Instructors on any queries regarding tactics, training and law enforcement equipment in their parks.
Required qualification(s), competencies, and experience:
  • At least 6 years relevant Law Enforcement military operational experience
  • Highly competent in use and training of relevant firearms (AKs, M14, M16, G3, FAL, handguns, rifles, and shotguns of various actions)
  • Relevant training experience, with at least 4 months proven experience in Law Enforcement instruction
  • Have experience and/or willingness to work in remote and dangerous areas, as well as in the vicinity of dangerous wildlife
  • Exercises sound tactical judgment under stress
  • Strong mentoring skills and highly focused on personal development
  • Trustworthy and diligent - able to run complex training and mentoring remotely
  • Have exacting standards and a keen eye for detail while maintaining a high level of flexibility and adaptability
  • Able to take ownership of tasks and work alone or in culturally diverse teams, and to exhibit leadership in a respectful and humble manner
  • Fluent in English, spoken and written, with Portuguese preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel and Word
