Job Description


The Academic Staff Development Programme (ASDP) is a response towards addressing challenges in the South African Higher Education system. The ASDP intends to identify and nurture academic talent early in the academic development trajectory, and to support newly recruited academics to develop teaching expertise; develop research skills, including scientific publication skills.
Appointment within the ASDP will be made such that staff equity targets are met, with preference to black and/or women South African citizens. To be eligible for selection for an ASDP post, applicants must meet the following criteria, in addition to meeting the minimum criteria specified for the post.

  • Be a CPUT registered post graduate student studying towards a Masters or doctoral qualification
  • Show interest in becoming an academic at CPUT
  • Be 40 years or younger
  • Be willing to undertake Learning and Teaching responsibilities within the department
The purpose of this post is to support the faculty and the department in pursuit of its academic and research objectives which include teaching according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and develop service-learning activities, support students at all levels, prioritising first year students through active participation in the First Year Experience and Academic Advising programmes. The successful candidate will be developed to be a future academic in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics.Job Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceMinimum Requirements
  • A Postgraduate Diploma qualification or Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Honours) qualification in Mechanical Engineering or in Mechatronics Engineering or in Electromechanical Engineering related field.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens who are 40 years or younger.
  • Applicants must be registered towards a Masters qualification or Doctoral qualification in CPUT
Recommendation:
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have shown satisfactory progress toward the completion of their studies.
Additional:
  • Applicants must ensure that they complete the studies they have enrolled for within the 3 years of the ASDP.
  • Applicants will have to attend and complete the Teaching Development Programme at the first available opportunity, but within the first two years of the ASDP.
  • Register with Engineering Council of South Africa as a candidate in the relevant category.

  • Lecture at undergraduate level in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics disciplines

  • Assist with marketing and recruitment activities
  • Perform other academic and support functions as may be required by the Head of Department
  • Attend conferences and publish in accredited journals or conference proceedings as required by the university for academics
