An exciting opportunity has become available within the FMCG industry, for an Assistant Quality Manager. The position is based in Cape Town. The primary responsibility is to support the Quality Manager by overseeing day-to-day quality control operations, ensuring that all products produced meet established standards, and identify areas of improvement through data analysis and process monitoring, while collaborating with production teams to maintain quality throughout all processes.REQUIREMENTS:

• 2 - 5 years of experience in the milling industry with a qualification in Food Science, Food Technology or Biotechnology
• Certifications in FSSC, HACCP, ISO 9001, and wheat grading will be advantageous

• Ensure wheat intake is tested according to the standards, 4021 Wheat Acceptance and 1001 Wheat Intake Procedure
• Conduct regular quality checks on other raw and packaging materials according to standards, 8009 Acceptance of production materials
• Report and document deviations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
• Serve as the point of contact for wheat suppliers and send the weekly planning schedule along with any changes to it
• Serve as the point of contact for wheat and bran transport contractors regarding logistical inquiries
• Company should never be in a situation where wheat loads cannot be offloaded due to poor communication
• The quality manager must be kept informed of the logistical status at all times
• Maintain and ensure data capturing is done directly after each load on Wheat Management and HLM
• Ensure monthly wheat and bran stock balances, investigate any discrepancies, and submit the stock in a timely manner to the Quality Manager
• Report and document all deviations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
• Fully responsible for Food Safety, housekeeping, Occupational Health and Safety and Pest management in this area
• Ensure wheat supplier certificates adhere to relevant industry regulations, food safety standards, and company quality policies
• Quality Assurance of Products

• Ensure daily testing and reporting of flour done correctly according to quality standards, 4005 Daily Flour Sampling and Quality Evaluation
• Conduct regular quality checks in-process products, and finished goods, utilizing established testing methods and sampling procedures
• Organize monthly sampling with external laboratories according to the 8042 Microbiological Testing Schedule.
• Ensure internal rapid micro-testing is performed aseptically and according to company standards
• Ensure the positive release of finished products aligns with specifications and customer specifications
• Maintain compliance with 1025 Certificates of Analysis Procedure
• Collaborate with production teams to identify and implement process improvements to enhance product quality and consistency
• Maintain detailed records of quality checks, process control, non-conformances and corrective actions
• Effectively communicate quality concerns to the millers, management, and other departments
• Quality Assurance of Operations

• Conduct regular inspections to ensure departments maintain Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS)
• Writing weekly and monthly quality reports
• Ensure all receiving, processing, verification, packing and dispatch records are correct
• Ensure that all staff use the correct documentation according to Document Control policy, 9021
• Monitor and liaise with pest control service providers
• Ensure internal pest controllers conduct inspections and follow up on pest sightings
• Train personnel on quality standards, procedures, proper inspection techniques and quality assurance principles to foster a positive food safety culture
• Manage and guide quality personnel by providing coaching and delegating tasks effectively
• Assist in investigating food safety incidents, customer complaints or non-compliance issues and implement corrective actions
• Ensure all non-conforming products are handled according to company procedure and relevant documentation is maintained
• Report any deviations to the Quality Manager
• Laboratory Management

• Ensure good laboratory practices are maintained
• Coordinate verifications and calibrations on all laboratory equipment as per schedule. This includes laboratory equipment at production
• Ensure that the laboratory and all the equipment will always be functional in a clean and neat state as per GLP and food safety requirements
• Ensure laboratory equipment SOPs are used and kept up to date
• Ensure Quality personnel are competent in all laboratory equipment
• Maintain retention samples and ensure the highest quality samples are kept for visual comparisons during product testing
• Ordering of lab consumables and chemicals from approved suppliers
• Food Safety and Quality Audits

• Assist in maintaining a readiness for third-party audits, supplier, and customer audits
• Coordinate mock recalls during internal audits and act as deputy for the Quality Manager
• General

• Assume the role of Quality Manager when he/she is on leave. Take full responsibility for the department, understand and execute all duties to be performed by the Quality Manager.
• Performing any other odd tasks as requested by management should arise.
