The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.The Dullah Omar Institute for Constitutional Law, Governance and Human Rights (the Institute) is a self-funded research institute in the Law Faculty at the University of the Western Cape. The Institute was established in 1990 as the Community Law Centre and works to realise the democratic values and human rights enshrined in South Africa's Constitution. It is founded on the belief that our constitutional order must promote good governance, socio-economic development and the protection of the rights of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. Given the need for regional integration to encourage development in Africa, the Institute also seeks to advance human rights and democracy in this broader context. Based on high quality research, the Institute engages in policy development, advocacy and educational initiatives, focusing on areas critical to the realisation of human rights and democracy in South Africa and Africa in general. The Institute's current focus areas are: multi-level governance; socio-economic rights, children's rights and criminal justice.The successful candidate for Associate Professor/Professor in the Dullah Omar Institute and will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Conduct multi-disciplinary research and publish in peer reviewed journals
  • Support the Director of the Institute and function as Deputy Director
  • Initiate and support fundraising and donor maintenance for the Institute
  • Participate in policy engagement and advocacy
  • Facilitate learning and teaching at postgraduate level in at least one of the Institute's focus areas
  • Undertake postgraduate supervision
  • Provide academic leadership and administration
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
Minimum RequirementsFor appointment at Professor
  • Doctorate in the field of law or social sciences
  • A track record of successful fundraising and donor management
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching in one of the Institute's focus areas
  • An outstanding record of quality peer reviewed publications in one of the Institute's focus areas
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at Master's and Doctoral level
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and international recognition in his/her discipline.
  • Evidence of advocacy and policy engagement for societal impact with learning and teaching and/or research
  • A track record of innovation and leadership in their field.
For appointment at Associate Professor
  • Doctorate in the field of law or social sciences
  • A track record of successful fundraising and donor management
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching in one of the Institute's focus areas
  • A record of quality peer reviewed publications in one of the Institute's focus areas
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision, at least at Master's level
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in his/her discipline.
  • Evidence of advocacy and policy engagement for societal impact with learning and teaching and/or research
  • A track record of innovation and leadership in their field.
