Help us deliver sustainable and efficient healthcare for all.The OpportunityWe are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to join Roche Diagnostics Cape Town.This role is based in the Computational Science and Informatics chapter area at Roche Diagnostics Cape Town, which supports all stages of product development, as well as operations. We enable stakeholders to transform their cutting edge ideas into life-changing products and support the efficient and seamless on-market operational aspects thereof. Our collaborative and learning mindset provides opportunities to grow and change the future of diagnostics.As a key contributor to the Bioinformatics Development team you will be supporting various cross-functional projects within a software development capacity and a focus on robust and reliable application development.Key Challenges

  • You are contributing to and further developing an established code base of production level solutions. In this context, you are responsible for improvements to efficiency and reliability of the applications.
  • You are supporting projects by providing valuable input to design decisions and the establishment of best practices. As a team we would like to grow with you as you progress in your career at Roche.
  • You are engaging and communicating regularly with stakeholders on project goals and requirements and implement as required.
  • You are learning new technologies and investigating their impact on making healthcare solutions affordable within a project and product context. Any improvement, regardless of magnitude, is key to making our solutions sustainable.
Who you are:
  • You hold a degree (Hons. or Master's preferred) in computer science or another computational discipline with experience working on biological data sets.
  • You have a strong understanding of the Python tech stack for full stack development. Knowledge of a strongly typed language would be beneficial.
  • You are familiar with processing data on HPC and linux infrastructure and environments. A firm understanding of cloud computing is required.
  • You are familiar with DevOps processes and best practices. Version control (git) experience is required.
  • You have knowledge of workflow managers (Snakemake, Nextflow) and their application to biological data processing and reproducible science.
  • You have experience with containerization technologies for robust deployments.
  • You possess good communication skills, a positive attitude and enjoy helping people, while being known for your solution oriented mindset.
Preferred:
  • Exceptionally qualified applicants with many years of relevant experience without a degree are also encouraged to apply.
