Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

To plan, design, fabricate structural parts, welding and cutting, and a good knowledge of pipe fitting, the rebuilding and refurbishment of new and old machines and a variety of other structural designs from stainless steel as and when required. Needs to be capable of working in the field in tight and difficult spaces and conditions, as well as able to repair breakdowns under pressure to reduce downtime.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES / PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning & Productivity

Determine project requirements, such as scope, assembly sequences, or required methods or materials, using blueprints, drawings, or written or verbal

instructions.

Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements and types of material to be used.

Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on material, using calculators, scribes, dividers, squares, or rulers.

Fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, or bonds to assemble components into products or to

repair metal items.

Welding and cutting of all types of metal components out of all kinds of metal materials (I.e., mild steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel)

Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, or smooth surfaces, seams, or joints of assembled parts, using hand tools or portable power tools.

Fabricate parts or components out of sheet metal (heavy & light duty steel)

Shape metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms, using hand tools and bending and cutting machines.

Repair or alter all metal parts in the factory, using welding machines, shears, hammers, punches, or drills.

Install assemblies, such as flashing, pipes, tubes, heating and air conditioning ducts, furnace casings, rain gutters, or downspouts in supportive frameworks.

To conduct maintenance / mechanical tasks during shutdown periods.

Checking and ordering of all raw materials required for the metal department.

Hire, train, or supervise new employees or apprentices.

Quality

To ensure that workmanship is of a high calibre preventing rework and unnecessary downtime.

Continuous inspection of all structural steel around and inside the plant/premises.

Maintain equipment, making repairs or modifications when necessary

Health & Safety All Metal and Mechanical installation work that is undertaken must meet accepted structural standards and to always comply with the OSH Act.

Maintain and update legislated registers as required by law i.e. Portable Electrical Equipment, ladders etc.

Complete required documentation of repairs and service information as well as job cards

Safety and Risk Management All Metal and Mechanical installation work that is undertaken must meet accepted structural standards and to always comply with the OSH Act.

Adhoc Assisting with ad hoc tasks and enquiries if and when required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Must be able to read drawings, do pattern development using triangulation and radial line geometry.

Sound knowledge on working with structural steel, IPE beams, channel iron, floor plates (heavy & light duty steel).

Knowledge and understanding of Oxy Acetylene gas (gas weld, braising and silver solder).

Work with MIG and TIG welding machines (mild steel and stainless steel).

Work with ARC welding m/c and plates from 1mm to 30mm.

Ability to work with grinders and sanding machines to a smooth finish.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 5 years related working experience in boiler making and welding work in a Manufacturing domain.

Ideal: 8 plus years solid working experience in boiler making or sheet metal working

Minimum Qualification: Trade tested Boilermaker/ Sheet Metal Worker
