To manage the day-to-day operations of a campus laboratory / laboratories, thereby creating a learning environment for lecturers and students in which experiments can be performed within budget and at high quality levels.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum qualification:

  • A Masters qualification in biological sciences is required.
Experience:
  • At least five years experience in a professional role in a laboratory environment
  • Managerial experience will be advantageous
Duties and ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities: * Accountable for the overall performance of a specific campus laboratory / laboratories :
  • Quality of practicals
  • Labtech evaluations
  • Student feedback
  • Adherence to academic and laboratory guidelines and module guides
  • Process compliance
  • Timeous / turnaround times for example, timeous start and end times of practicals
  • Full delivery according to schedules / timetables
  • Compliance to:
  • Academic support and laboratory housekeeping roles
  • Relevant laboratory procedures and regulations.
  • Waste management
  • Safety / OHS
  • Relevant national and internationally regulatory guidelines for example OHSA
  • Support for practical lecturers in addressing student queries
  • Maintenance and availability of laboratory assets / equipment and consumables

  • Operational day-to-day planning for the laboratories e.g.
  • Provide input to National Lab Manager and/or Timetabling tea on lab timetabling and planning
  • Designate the roles, responsibilities of the laboratory team according to the communicated academic schedule and laboratory housekeeping needs
  • Manage the various forms of waste generated in the laboratory and ensure that collection, storage and disposal of wastes complies with national regulations
  • Adjustment / input of timetable
  • Operational implementation and execution monitoring and reporting - control, corrective action
  • Problem solving and decision quality, including escalations, queries and complaints
  • Resource and capacity management for the labs (people, equipment, consumables, workload and workflow monitoring between teams) e.g. procurement as delegated scope and requests for resources to National Lab Manager
  • Provide input National Lab Manager regarding operational efficiency - processes, policies and procedures (SOPs), methodologies, performance standards e.g.
  • Compile and maintain a laboratory manual outlining the policy and procedures to which all laboratory users must comply to ensure a safe and functional working environment.
  • Write, edit and disseminate laboratory and general safety policies, assist with standard operating procedures.
  • Work-flow co-ordination of laboratory technicians and ensure their compliance with all laboratory procedures.
  • Governance and compliance / Risk management e.g.
  • Ensure that all students within the laboratory comply with the relevant laboratory procedures and regulations
  • Leadership

Functional and Behavioural CompetenciesFunctional and technical competencies:
  • Proficient in using and maintaining laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong understanding of SOPs, and lab safety protocols, and regulatory requirements (e.g. ISO 17025, 14001 and 9001)
  • Have knowledge of the operations related to different levels of BSL laboratories
