Durban University of Technology (DUT) is located on the warm east coast of South Africa in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It sprawls over seven (7) campuses that cater for about 32 000 students. Two of these are located in spectacular KZN Midlands, well-known for its undulating hills, which unfurl coastwards from the Drakensburg Mountains nearby. LOCATION: DURBANDurban University of Technology (DUT) invites applications for the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO). The incumbent will be responsible for providing vision and leadership for developing and implementing Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS) strategies that align with DUTs overall mission and strategy.The CIO will establish and direct strategic and tactical goals, policies, and procedures for ICTS while ensuring the delivery of world-class IT systems and services. The role includes developing technology solutions that enable knowledge management, data governance, and IT infrastructure, ensuring compliance with governance frameworks and relevant policies.MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:

  • A Masters qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Systems from an accredited institution.
  • A Postgraduate Qualification in Management will be an added advantage.
  • 10 years of well-rounded ICT practical experience, including:
  • 5 years at a senior management level.
  • Proven track record in ICT service, support, and infrastructure management in a medium-to-large organisation.
  • Prior experience in the management of a major ICTS function in a corporate environment across the entire ICTS value chain.
  • Strategic background in planning and management of an ICTS function.
  • Experience in ICTS programme and project management.
  • Strong financial management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse teams.
  • Project Management Certification.
  • ITIL Foundation or Practitioner Certification.
  • Certified Business/Systems Engineer.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Higher Education ICTS requirements.
  • Training in high-level service management.
  • Sound working knowledge of ITIL and IT Governance Frameworks (COBIT).
  • Working knowledge of IT Security Standards and Tools.
  • Sound working knowledge of Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) standards.
  • Sound working knowledge of IT Service Processes.
  • Knowledge and experience in Project Management & ASAP Methodology.
  • IT risk and cybersecurity governance expertise.
IDEAL:
  • A Doctorate or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
  • Prior experience as a Chief Information Officer (CIO) in a corporate or educational environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Extensive travel may be required.
  • Flexibility to work long hours.
DUTIES
  • Align ICT strategy with DUTs strategic objectives.
  • Ensure ICT service delivery processes are well-resourced.
  • Develop an Information Knowledge Management framework.
  • Maintain and enhance business applications and intelligence capabilities.
  • Deliver software projects on time and within budget.
  • Manage third-party suppliers and provide role-based training.
  • Ensure adequate infrastructure availability and compliance with governance standards.
  • Manage ICT service quality and internal customer satisfaction.
  • Align ICTS objectives with strategy and manage resources effectively.
  • Monitor performance, implement corrective actions, and present reports.
  • Develop and control the ICTS budget, ensuring financial alignment.
  • Prepare financial reports and conduct budget reviews.
  • Monitor IT security risks and compliance with regulations.
  • Manage security incidents and cybersecurity awareness programs.
  • Align risk management with the universitys ERM framework.
