Job Description


To provide diverse technical support on detailed, complex mechanical engineering tasks, designs and planning requirements for eThekwini Electricity.
Key Responsibility Areas

  • Provide design, draughting and technical services for optimum utilisation and development of mechanical systems.
  • Explore new and improving on methods, techniques, materials equipment and sources of supply.
  • Ensure the correct documentation of incoming work, maintain adequate stocks of consumable materials, attend to correspondence etc.
  • Determine job priorities of in-coming work in the mechanical workshop branch, distribute work to the respective superintendent.
  • Undertake detailed, complex mechanical engineering design work.
  • Travel to work site to record measurements and sketches.
  • Report daily to the manager.
  • Maintain close liaison with the electricity units managers, customers, consultants, contractors and workshops superintendents.
  • Plan and supervise detailed, complex projects initiated and undertaken in mechanical workshops branch.
  • Inspect outside purchases with contractual specifications for compliance.
  • Prepare detailed, complex quotations.
  • Train staff, including trainee technicians, seconded to the mechanical workshops branch.
  • Liaise with other branches, units, outside companies and clients for procurement of work and detailed, complex and technical matters.
  • Ensure the availability of specialist vehicles, equipment and manpower for joint projects.
  • The selection, specification and timeous procurement of equipment and materials for selected projects/jobs.
  • Assist in controlling of all costs for the work carried out by the mechanical workshops branch.
  • Assist with the supervision, implementation and operation of manpower planning.
  • Monitor the progress of contractors on jobs being controlled by the mechanical workshops branch.
  • Assist in ensuring that managements objectives are carried out effectively.
  • Assist in implementing the requirements of the OHS act requirements.

Essential Requirements
  • National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Mechanical Engineering recognized by the Council of Higher Education
  • Registered as a Professional Technician with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • 5 Years relevant post registration experience.
