We deliver technical services and technology systems to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the De Beers Diamond value chain (from exploration to diamond recovery). Activities include marine geophysical survey, sampling, and mining, projects, engineering, technology development and maintenance. Projects include the establishment and development of a fleet of mining ships and all associated equipment. We provide specialised diamond processing and recovery technology for the De Beers Group Exploration and Mining Operations. We are the industry leader in marine mining practices resulting in the most successful and advanced marine mining equipment and operations globally.Provide expertise in design, fault diagnostics, maintenance and modification of automation system software and hardware for our suite of diamond recovery machines. The function includes the commissioning and integration of automation systems for De Beers Technology machines into plant wide control systems.The role forms part of the Engineering team, whose responsibility is to design and build De Beers Technology products and to provide site support to our valued customers.Your role will:

  • Deliver automation systems expertise to the development team for new projects.
  • Provide innovative, cost-effective solutions in response to product technical life cycle support challenges on product related automation, instrumentation and electrical concerns.
  • Provide customer orientated technical service and advice, both remotely and on-site.
  • Provide plant to machine control system integration during factory acceptance testing and site acceptance testing.
  • Identify and utilise cost saving initiatives in the execution of product designs and in the support and maintenance of the installed products.
  • Generate and incorporate innovative ideas and solutions into the products we design to ensure our products are leading edge.
  • Develop and maintain accurate technical documentation related to automation system design, testing and performance.
  • Ensure compliance to applied automation system design and development standards.
QualificationsFormal qualifications and experience:
  • Recognized Technician Qualification (T3, S4 or N6, BTech or equivalent).
  • Five years or more advanced programming experience using Siemens TIA portal software is essential.
  • Five years or more relevant industrial experience in the arena of automation systems.
  • Experience with respect to design, repair, maintenance, and fault diagnostics of automation systems.
  • Understanding of the application of diamond recovery machines within the mining industry would be advantageous.
  • Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal).
Additional requirements:
  • Valid Code 08/EB Driver's License.
  • Computer skills
  • Security clearance
Role-specific knowledge:
  • Design, layout, procurement and building of integrated control systems.
  • Siemens PLC design and trouble-shooting experience. Understanding of instrumentation interfaces to control systems.
  • Knowledge of industry-based communication protocols for interfacing different automation systems from the same vendor as well as across different vendors. Display practical experience in interfacing different vendor systems.
  • Basic understanding of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
  • Fault finding abilities from machine to component level.
  • Instrumentation and Electrical system design and selection, P&ID interpretation, and generation.
  • Familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Experience in the use of ePLAN would be advantageous, but not required.
  • Planning, organising and controlling work packages. Communication skills, networking abilities, stakeholder engagement and management skills required.
  • Understanding of diamond recovery technology would be advantageous.
