Job Description


A Global Pharmaceutical company has a vacancy for a Clinical Technologist in their renal division to join their team in Cape Gate, Mosselbay, Simonstown and Worcester Western Cape.Responsibilities:Unit/Patient Care:

  • Ensure optimal patient dialysis for each day.
  • Machines are to be primed on patient arrival.
  • Undertake a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment on patient arrival for dialysis regarding vital data, pre and post weights and clinical appearance.
  • Contribute to care planning, involving patients and demonstrates an understanding of patients rights to make informed treatment decisions.
  • Ensure documentation is current, accurate, and timely. Maintain confidentiality with a legal and ethical framework relating to patient care.
  • Ensure that medication is administered as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Evaluate patients progress toward expected outcomes, including treatments and health education, in collaboration with the patient and health care team.
  • Take appropriate nursing actions in emergency situations and other situations that may compromise patient safety.
  • Contribute, support and teach colleagues to enhance professional development.
  • Ensure each patient feel comfortable with the process at all times.
  • Ensure that all pre and post observations are conducted and recorded.
  • -Take bloods according to SOP as per monthly requirement, Drs request/ prescription.
  • Document observations on an hourly basis. (if patient is unstable or not well half hourly).
  • Ensure that the patient is satisfied with the treatment they have received before they leave.
  • Ensure that the machines are cleaned and sterilised after the completion of each treatment and before another treatment begins (as per protocol).
  • Any problems or inconsistencies with equipment or patient care should be brought to the Unit Manager' or Shift leaders attention immediately.
  • Adhere to infection control policies.
  • Staff working in the chronic unit should assist in acute dialysis upon request.
  • Staff on call for acute dialysis must assist in the chronic unit if there are no acute patients requiring treatment.
  • Ensure all patients have a valid prescription for dialysis.
  • Record all doctors orders and when telephonic orders get a witness to co-sign.
  • Promote all different modes of dialysis CHD, CAPD and APD.
  • You are required to also assist with cleaning the machines, making the beds, changing the linen, cleaning the unit and other duties related to this, when needed, so that our unit and work is of the highest standard.
  • Assist with patient home visits, patient training and education.
  • Perform Tube changes on PD patients according to policy.
Doctors:
  • Promote growth in patient numbers by maintaining a good working relation with and providing feedback to referring doctors regarding patient care.
DataWise/Stock:
  • Fill in the Patient Billing register and COGS accurately at the time of dialysis.
  • Ensure that the patient signs in the appropriate place on the Patient Billing register at the end of the treatment.
  • Assist with stock counts
  • Ensure that all COGS on DataWise is captured accurately
  • Ensure that all relevant information is captured on Datawise on admission of the patient
  • Datawise must be updated and accurate at all times, including reports on patient hospitalizations, capturing of corrective action for abnormal blood results, completing KT/Vs, adequate management of all clinical KPIs, MSV checks, billings and COGS and accurate patients clinical and social information.
  • Keep DataWise program up to date with your dedicated Patient information.
KidneyWise Program:
  • When required, participate in community awareness events and programs aimed at prevention, detection and management of patients with CKD. Ensure that GPs and referring Drs are informed about Kidney wise and our goals. Participate in kidney awareness screenings.
Maintain the following at all times:
  • All practices should be done safely based on professional, ethical and legal standards by relevant legislation and codes of good practice.
  • Promote an environment that enables patient safety, independence, quality of life and health
  • Ensure that patient care is of a high standard and, attention and respect is given to the patient at all times.
  • Ensure that you consciously refrain from doing or causing harm of any nature whatsoever.
  • Submit timely stats.
  • Ensure that all health and safety policies are read and adhered to.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Current registration with HPCSA as a Graduate Clinical Technologist in Nephrology
  • (2) years as clinical technologist
  • Patient (and family) education in treatment for kidney failure
  • Basic administration
