The Mycology Division aims to improve the outcomes of people affected by serious, life-threatening fungal diseases in South Africa and the African region through public health-focused epidemiological, clinical, and basic science research and innovation
It currently manages a number of clinical trials and research projects
As part of the Divisions core and nested work, it seeks to appoint a qualified Clinical Trial Assistant to participate in a number of vital roles and assist in realizing the vision of the Division
Main purpose of the job:
To Facilitate the recruitment, enrolment, and follow-up of patients
Coordinate patient referral for peripheral facilities to the central enrolment site, assist with various research-related administrative tasks, and act as patient advocate by supporting and assisting patients as required

Key performance areas:
Use of electronic databases to screen and contact patients for recruitment into the EFFECT study at different healthcare facilities
Conduct any pre-study telephonic and/or in-person screening for potential participants (HIV testing, urine pregnancy tests, detailed history taking)
Actively assist and participate in the various stages of the screening and enrolment process and communicate with the study doctor and study nurse throughout the process
Record all data obtained and maintain all data and case report forms, both paper and electronic
Assist in explaining the study to patients and obtaining informed consent
Assist with collecting study medication and explaining to patients how to use the study medication, including completion of a medication diary
Assist with the follow-up of participants, review and documenting participants' progress and challenges
Maintain confidentiality of all participants study information
Ensure that accurate and complete records are kept with regard to study recruitment, screening, losses to the study, and enrolment (paper and electronic)
Assist in the preparation of study materials e.g. participant folders
Assist with stock counts and replenishment of study equipment
Required minimum education and training:
Grade 12
Basic knowledge of HIV & AIDS
Computer literacy in MS Office
Required minimum work experience:
Minimum 1 year experience in counselling/advocacy work as an HIV Counsellor or similar
Experience in clinical trials would be advantageous
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
Certification in good clinical practice is advantageous
Certificate/qualification in HIV counseling and testing is advantageous
Experience working in a research environment
Prior experience using the NHLS Labtrack/ TrackCare database is advantageous
Good written and verbal communication skills, preferably both in English and isiZulu
Good administrative skills
An ordered and systematic approach with good organizational skills
Tactful, respectful, and able to maintain confidentiality
Self-motivated and takes initiative- will be required to work independently much of the time
Able to work independently as well as part of a team
Drivers license and own car
