Job Description


Our client in the Hospitality and Culinary industry is currently looking for a Commis Chef (Japanese Cuisine), in Stellenbosch, Western Cape.Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and production of traditional Japanese dishes, including sushi, sashimi, tempura, and ramen, under the guidance of senior chefs.
  • Ensure that all mise-en-place is prepared ahead of service and meets the restaurants quality standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of ingredients such as vegetables, proteins, and sauces used in Japanese cuisine.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstations in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Support the culinary team during service, ensuring that dishes are plated and presented according to the restaurant's fine dining standards.
  • Learn and adhere to recipes, techniques, and procedures specific to Japanese cuisine.
  • Ensure all food products are stored and handled safely and in accordance with the highest food hygiene standards.
  • Contribute to maintaining a positive, collaborative kitchen environment by working efficiently and respectfully with other team members.
  • Stay up to date with Japanese culinary trends and continuously seek ways to improve your skills.
Requirements:
  • Culinary Diploma or relevant Formal Training from an Accredited Institution.
  • Previous experience as a Commis Chef or Trainee Chef in a fine dining or luxury restaurant setting (experience in Japanese cuisine is highly advantageous).
  • Passion for Japanese cuisine and willingness to learn traditional techniques and recipes.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to follow instructions carefully.
  • Strong work ethic, punctuality, and the ability to work under pressure during peak service times.
  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • A team player with good communication skills and a desire to grow within the culinary industry.
Remuneration and Benefits:
  • Up to R7 500 CTC per month.
