BACKGROUND





African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on responsibility for the long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. African Parks manages 23 protected areas in 13 countries covering over 20 million hectares in Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.



African Parks is seeking a full-time Communications Co-ordinator within the Communications and Marketing Department to be based in the head office in Johannesburg, South Africa. This position is an exciting opportunity to work with a non-profit conservation organisation dedicated to protecting Africa's wildlife and remaining wild places.



African Parks is looking for a highly organised, self-motivated and personable individual to assume the role of Comms Assistant. The individual should have experience in marketing and communication and ideally some experience in conservation to assist in coordinating tasks for the team.



The primary purpose of the position is to:


Assist with a broad set of responsibilities, including helping with team travel logistics; the compilation and storage of information and other content; the management of calendars, inventories, databases and other central repositories; Work with all members of the team to ensure efficient coordination and planning of group projects and campaigns; Assist with a broad set of digital and multimedia responsibilities, including helping with website updates, social media engagement, the compilation and storage of photo and video content, and content generation where needed.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:



Newsletter and Mailer Management:

Oversee the newsletter and mailer/database management, including the segmenting, and sending of all newsletters.

Multimedia and Asset Management:

Manage and curate online systems, including SharePoint with living documents (video files, brochures, factsheets, etc.). Maintain and organize the Communications and Marketing Department's database of multimedia assets (Filecamp, Frame.io), ensuring proper cataloguing, accessibility, and searchability.

Social Media and Website Support:

Contribute to the production of written and visual content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn). Assist with basic updates to the African Parks website and microsites, ensuring content remains current.

Vendor and Merchandise Management:

Handle vendors, ordering, and shipping of merchandise. Manage inventory of marketing materials and merchandise for efficient planning and task management.

Special Projects Coordination:

Coordinate the collection, compilation, distribution, and shipping of relevant materials such as factsheets, brochures, Annual Reports, and other marketing collateral.

Travel and Logistics Coordination:

Organise travel arrangements for the team, photographers, videographers, media and any stakeholders within the department, including booking flights, securing visas, and overseeing logistics.

External Partner Collaboration:

Work with third parties as requested, including external production agencies, tourism groups, designers, donors, and other partners.

Contracts:

Manage contracts and logistics for content creators, photographers, videographers, media and writers visiting the parks, ensuring smooth coordination and support.

Financial and Administrative Support:

Create purchase orders, process departmental invoices, and maintain records related to the departmental budget.

Campaign and Asset Sharing:

Create folders with top photos and videos of each park, ensuring accurate captions and timely distribution to partners, press, and donors. Assist in developing bespoke multimedia asset folders for specific campaigns and requests.

Overall Departmental Support:

Provide assistance to the CMO/Director and the broader team with any marketing and communications needs including setting up team meetings and taking minutes.


QUALIFICATIONS




Minimum 1-year experience in marketing or communications or relevant conservation disciplines, preferably with experience working with digital and multimedia; Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or Conservation; or Communications, Marketing, English or Journalism; Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team, manage projects, maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines; Strong record-keeping and administration skills Ability to learn quickly Multi-tasking and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks Proficiency with Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and in Adobe Photoshop and Premier Pro; Strong proficiency in digital asset management tools such as Filecamp and Frame.io. Experience with TouchbasePro (similar to HubSpot and Mailchimp) for newsletter and mailer/database management. Skilled in content management systems, including SharePoint and website updates. Proficiency in project management and collaboration tools such as Basecamp. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and software, especially Power Point and Excel Candidate must be highly organised, creative, and with exceptional attention to detail Ability to handle fast-paced, multi-tasking environment under minimal supervision Goal-oriented, professional, self-motivated, highly flexible and adaptable to change
