Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

Institutional Advancement is dedicated to increasing awareness, public support and financial contributions to the University through alumni relations, communications, development, and special events. The Donor Relations Unit raises and manages philanthropic donations from corporates, trusts and foundations. We engage donors on academic, research and other institutional priorities important to them. By putting donors at the centre of the process, we foster an environment where excellence in student, staff and community engagement success can be accomplished through greater private funding.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for identifying and providing high-quality prospect information to support the Executive and staff involved in fundraising, communication, marketing, and relationship development while maintaining accurate pipeline data ensuring that information provided to the fundraising team is thorough and well-communicated so as to inform strategic decision making. The Prospect Researcher is a shared resource between the Donor and Alumni Relations Units.

The position requires proficiency in prospect identification, CRM administration (including prospect and constituent management using Devman), ensuring data quality, developing reports, as well as having a strong understanding of fundraising processes, donor cultivation, and related financial processes.

The key performance areas include the following:

  • Proactively identify, research and qualify donor/alumni prospects for the University's fundraising portfolio.
  • Provide professional fundraising support for the Fundraising and Alumni Relations team.
  • Draft donor engagement briefing documents for and in consultation with the fundraising team.
  • Proactively monitor and match funding calls or requests for proposals with the University fundraising portfolio.
  • Proactively manage and update the donor and alumni database with quality biographical data.
  • Produce relevant donor reports/presentations for meetings and publications.
  • Provide general support to the fundraising and alumni team's stewardship initiatives, e.g. donor report reminders, coordination of events etc.
  • Initiate and co-ordinate the direct mail campaigns of the department.
  • Prioritise and attend to ad-hoc requests for donor and project information.
Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements: (Qualification and Experience)
  • A relevant Bachelors degree at an NQF level 7 or an equivalent qualification.
  • 3 years' experience in prospect and/or market research in a development, non-profit or corporate environment.
  • Certified proficiency in a database management system OR a certificate in Advanced Excel.
Added advantage and preferences:
  • Two years' experience in Higher Education Two years' experience using DevMan
Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes):
  • Demonstrate professional and effective, communication, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrate competence in a variety of computer applications, including database, spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Excellent writing, and communication skills.
  • Capable of handling multiple responsibilities and working to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to locate and interpret financial and biographical information from a variety of sources.
