Job Description


Purpose of RoleTo provide oversight and management of all aspects of the crushing activities in the mine plant by ensuring safe and efficient processes to produce the required quality and quantity of planned products in line with Tharisa Minerals (TMs) standards. To manage the Crusher staff to achieve a stable operation of the processing plant and ensure adherence to safety and environmental regulations.Role ContextOperational Management

  • Provide input to strategic plans of the process department compiling comprehensive operational plans, converting the Department into an enabler of the overall business strategy of the organisation.
  • Keep abreast of changes in relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies, processes and/or procedures require amendment.
  • Develop, enhance and implement policies, processes and operational procedures that are within the respective Department aimed at the enhancement of service delivery and overall productivity within the Department.
  • Develop and manage the crusher plants production plans and activities to optimise efficiencies and recoveries in order to continuously enhance and maintain quality of produced products.
  • Contribute to the development and integration of the crusher plants production with the overall mining plant plans to enable the effective operation of the plant process in alignment to agreed process parameters to achieve daily and monthly targets.
  • Setup and manage minor projects with regards to the specialised and priority processing and delivery initiatives within the crusher plant by scoping and putting in place resource plans to achieve project goals within project guidelines.
  • Develop policies and standards for all crushing activities in the Crusher plant including defining the scope and objectives in line with the overall mining plant production plan and ensure adherence to the production plans to achieve process stability and efficiency.
  • Develop maintenance plans and ensure the maintenance and repair of all crushing machinery and equipment such as crushers, screens, conveyors and associated components within the mining plant to minimise downtime and maximise productivity.
  • Develop and manage a planned inspection schedule for critical equipment to proactively detect and identify potential equipment failure to ensure preventative action is taken.
  • Collaborate with plant superintendent to develop and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, reduce costs and enhance overall plant performance.
Financial Management
  • Analyse all relevant Department data and report on Departmental trends and operating requirements so as to determine funding requirements for the financial year.
  • Monitor short-term Departmental budgets by scrutinising and aligning spend within the Department, to support and drive effective and efficient functioning within budgetary constraints.
  • Monitor Departmental expenditure against budget allocations by requesting appropriate reallocation as required, to manage the prevention of unnecessary spend.
  • Comply with all financial, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and other Tharisa Minerals (TM) regulations and policies by facilitating the right actions, to reduce financial risk in the Department.
  • Manage, monitor and control the Crusher operational budget and ensure adherence to monthly budget for plant consumables and spares.
People Management
  • Create and maintain a conducive work environment by appropriately applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the Department and, by extension, the organisation.
  • Lead the team according to TMs leadership principles and values throughout the entire employee life cycle (performance management, reward etc) to ensure, inter alia, a high-performance culture.
  • Manage plant personnel, monitor performance and provide regular feedback to address any performance issues.
  • Create a high performing team and conducive employee relations by identifying skills gaps, recommend development plans and ensuring staff are trained and equipped to perform their duties.
  • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.
Stakeholder Relations
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure information, advice or opinions on relevant matters is made available and/or communicated with all relevant stakeholders, to manage expectations and timelines.
  • Utilise opportunities presented to enhance the relationship between management, unions and employees, and implement processes to maximise a collaborative working relationship.
  • Liaise and collaborate with the maintenance team to prioritise equipment maintenance and repairs to ensure availability of necessary materials and supplies to support uninterrupted production.
  • Coordinate with various departments and plant stakeholders by regularly communicating production updates, challenges and opportunities to enable smooth operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to provide advice and recommend plans and strategies to implement plant modifications and upgrades.
Compliance, Risk and Safety
  • Promote and enforce a culture of safety by minimising risk and ensure adherence to safety procedures and guidelines in line with the MHSA to achieve safe and sustainable mining practices.
  • Plan and execute planned shutdowns and preventive maintenance of plant section and equipment by stopping the operation if the working conditions are unsafe.
  • Develop and implement a risk register to monitor and record potential and recurring risks in order to develop strategies to mitigate such risks and creating a safety culture.
  • Influence the interdepartmental collaboration and coordination efforts to execute drills and escape procedures in case of emergencies and operational requirements i.e. blasting to mitigate risks and fatalities.
Resource Management
  • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
  • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
  • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
  • Manage and develop utilisation plans and principles to enable monitoring with regards to the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.

Qualifications:
  • Diploma (NQF 6) in Chemical Engineering / Metallurgy
Certifications:
  • Management development programme (NQF 5)
Job specific experience:
  • 5 - 8 years experience of which at least 2 years managing production teams
