Job Summary:



We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced

Mechanical Engineer/Diesel Mechanic

to join our team in a municipal setting. The successful candidate will be responsible for the

repair, maintenance, and servicing of water engines, generators, and other mechanical equipment

to ensure optimal functionality and minimal downtime. The role requires a strong technical background, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1.

Maintenance and Repairs:



Conduct routine maintenance and servicing of

water engines, generators, pumps, and other mechanical equipment

to ensure efficient operation. Diagnose and repair mechanical faults in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and related machinery. Replace worn-out or damaged parts, including filters, belts, hoses, and seals. Perform emergency repairs to minimize downtime and ensure continuous service delivery.

Inspections and Testing:



Inspect equipment regularly to identify potential issues and prevent breakdowns. Test mechanical systems and components to ensure they meet safety and performance standards. Conduct performance tests on water engines and generators after repairs or servicing.
3.

Installation and Commissioning:



Oversee the installation and commissioning of new mechanical equipment, including water engines and generators. Ensure all installations comply with municipal regulations and safety standards.
4.

Documentation and Reporting:



Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and replacements. Prepare detailed reports on equipment performance, faults, and repair activities. Monitor inventory of spare parts and tools, and place orders when necessary.
5.

Compliance and Safety:



Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with

Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

regulations and municipal policies. Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards in the workplace. Train municipal staff on the safe operation and basic maintenance of mechanical equipment.
6.

Team Collaboration:



Work closely with other engineers, technicians, and municipal staff to ensure seamless operations. Provide technical guidance and support to junior staff or apprentices. Participate in planning and budgeting for mechanical maintenance projects.
7.

Other Duties:



Assist with the maintenance of other municipal machinery, such as vehicles, compressors, and pumps. Respond to after-hours call-outs for emergency repairs when required. Stay updated on the latest advancements in mechanical engineering and diesel technology.

Qualifications and Experience:



Diploma or Degree or NQF 6 in Diesel Mechanical Engineering or any other related field

.

Trade Test Certificate

as a Diesel Mechanic or equivalent certification. Minimum of

2-5 years of experience

in maintaining and repairing diesel engines, generators, and water pumps. Experience working in a

municipal or industrial setting

is highly advantageous. Strong knowledge of mechanical components. Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment. Valid driver's license (Code 10 or 14 will be an advantage).

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Physical stamina and the ability to work in challenging environments.

Working Conditions:



The role may involve working outdoors, in workshops, or at various municipal sites. Occasional overtime and emergency call-outs may be required.
