Job Description


The Scholarly Communication and Digitization Unit at CPUT Libraries has a key vacancy for a Digital Scholarship Librarian to provide important services to the research community at CPUT. This position plays a key role in developing, providing, coordinating, promoting and delivering Digital Scholarship services for the CPUT researcher community. The Digital Scholarship Librarian will collaborate with and support the use of digital scholarship technologies and tools, provide consultations and training to librarians, researchers, and postgraduate students at each stage of the research lifecycle. These tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Integration of CPUT Libraries scholarly communication services and resources towards CPUT's eResearch activities.
  • Improve scholarly communication and digital scholarship through building relationships with faculty and research entities to facilitate research output and research data retention for future use.
  • Develop strategies, supporting resources and programs to assist CPUT academics/researchers and postgraduate students with their scholarly communication.
  • Provide Research Data Management (RDM) Services, including the Data Management Plan tool and the CPUT eSango research data repository, powered by Figshare, as administrator.
  • Provide Scholarly Communication and Open Access Services, including support for scholarly publication within DHET accreditation lists and APC transformative agreements awareness, Article Processing Charges (APC's) and Open Science matters.
  • Provide CPUT Journal publishing support to editorial teams on the Open Journal System (OJS) as administrator.
  • Support preservation strategies, including the Arkivum platform, as administrator.
  • Development of GIS and data visualisation tools and services.
  • Research Impact Services, including Metric reports (Bibliometrics / Altmetrics) and assisting with building researcher profiles for increased researcher impact in support of the Library Faculty Support Teams.
  • In partnership with other research support stakeholders, develop advocacy and training programs in copyright management, use of creative commons licenses, and open access dissemination of research.
  • Marketing and promoting of scholarly communication services and tools.
  • Delivery of training for Library staff, researchers, and postgraduate students on all aspects of scholarly communication, in particular open access publishing.
  • Collection, generation, and dissemination of all types of CPUT's research output.
  • Coordinate the development of the Advanced Information Literacy program for postgraduate students in collaboration with the training librarian and offer training sessions both within and outside the Advanced IL programme in collaboration with Library Faculty Support Teams.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A relevant 4-year degree in areas such as Digital Sciences, Information Systems and Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Law, Publishing, Media
  • 3 years relevant experience in Digital Scholarship in a relevant learning, teaching and research environment, scholarly publishing
  • Able to work flexibly as and when required across campuses
