Contributes to the preparation and implementation of an IDP compliant environmental assessment and review protocol aimed at achieving sustainable development and protection of the Unicity's environmental assets.This post reports to MANAGER (BIODIVERSITY IMPACT ASSESSMENT)Key Responsibility AreasENVIRONMENTALIST

• Implements the National and Provincial Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations and ensures compliance with related environmental legislation as instructed by Manager Development Assessment.
• Contributes to the preparation and implementation of an Environmental Management System.
• Liaise with stakeholders and officials concerned with environmental planning and management matters.
• Assists standing committees in their deliberations where these may have an impact on the environmental management and/ or environmental quality of the city.
• Investigates environmental queries and ensures compliance with environmental legislation and policy.
• Oversees the preparation of environmental plans for specific areas or activities.
• Oversees project implementation.
• Gathers and manages relevant environmental information.
• Assess and comments on applications of varying complexity and scale, submitted in terms of any legislation for council and private developments.
• Contributes to the preparation of EMs environmental input into provincial environmental management and implementation plans.
• Assists Manager Development Assessment and Implementation in the management of consultant.

SENIOR ENVIRONMENTALIST

• Investigates environmental queries and ensures compliance with environmental legislation and policy.
• Oversees the preparation of environmental plans for specific areas or activities.
• Assists committees in their deliberations where these may have an impact on the environmental management.
• Undertakes negotiations with other stakeholders around complex or controversial issues.
• Identifies strategic projects or research that need to be undertaken and prepares appropriate budget and action plans.
• Conceptualises and develops sustainable development indicators.
• Reviews database in order to identify gaps and needs related to the development and monitoring of Environmental Management System and to prepare action plans and budgets to address these needs in order to ensure the development of an appropriate database.
• Oversees, manages and directs activities of junior and technical staff.
• Manipulates and manages information.
• Assess and comments on applications of varying complexity and scale, submitted in terms of any legislation for council and private developments.
• Contributes to the preparation of EMs environmental input into provincial environmental management and implementation plans.
• Manages consultants appointed to undertake work for the environmental management department.

Essential RequirementsENVIRONMENTALIST

• Post graduate qualification (NQF level 8) in one of the following disciplines Environmental Management or Environmental Science or Natural Science or any other related and equivalent qualification.
• Professional registration with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
• Professional registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.).
• Valid motor vehicle driving license.
• 4 years relevant experience in environmental assessment and the review of environmental impact assessment reports.
• Computer Literacy.

SENIOR ENVIRONMENTALIST

• Post graduate qualification (NQF level 8) in one of the following disciplines Environmental Management or Environmental Science or Natural Science or any other related and equivalent qualification.
• Professional registration with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
• Professional registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.).
• Valid motor vehicle driving license.
• 5 years relevant experience in environmental assessment and the review of environmental impact assessment reports.
• Computer Literacy.

• Post graduate qualification (NQF level 9) in one of the following disciplines Environmental Management or Environmental Science or Natural Science or any other related and equivalent qualification.
• Professional registration with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
• Professional registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.).
• Valid motor vehicle driving license.
• 6 Years relevant experience in environmental assessment and the review of environmental assessment reports.
