The Field Technician is responsible for providing on-site technical support, maintenance, and repair services for heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs), yellow plant machinery, and general fleet vehicles. This role requires extensive travel and hands-on problem-solving to ensure fleet reliability, minimize downtime, and uphold safety and compliance standards. The incumbent must be proficient in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems while maintaining accurate service records and adhering to company policies.
KEY OUTPUTS/ ACCOUNTABILITY
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Maximize returns linked to the Maintenance Fund burn rate thresholds
Optimize supplier discounts and rebate structures for vehicle repairs
Ensure cost-effective operational solutions to enhance profitability.
Preventative Maintenance & Repairs
Conduct weekly preventative maintenance, including greasing, lubrication, and pressure washing.
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on-site.
Perform routine inspections and safety checks on fleet vehicles.
Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide roadside assistance.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and transport legislation.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
Provide technical assistance for HCVs, yellow plant machines, and general vehicles.
Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to identify faults and implement solutions.
Collaborate with the operations team to optimize fleet performance.
Ensure timely resolution of mechanical issues to minimize vehicle downtime.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and compliance reports.
Adhere to company policies, safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
Conduct regular fleet condition assessments and report any risks or defects.
Operational Efficiency & Reporting
Ensure optimal vehicle utilization and performance through proactive maintenance.
Prepare and present reports on fleet maintenance activities and issues.
Analyse service trends and recommend improvements to enhance reliability.
Equipment & Inventory Management
Manage and maintain assigned service vehicle and diagnostic tools.
Ensure availability of essential spare parts and maintenance supplies.
Conduct inventory checks and report on tool and equipment usage.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Matric (Grade 12).
Minimum Nated Qualification Level: N3 in an Automotive technical field.
Completed Trade Test (Diesel Mechanic or Petrol & Diesel Mechanic).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar field technician role.
At least 2 years' experience with diesel engines, trucks, and yellow machines.
Previous experience as a field mechanic or technician.
Strong knowledge of transport legislation, health & safety standards.
Knowledge of passenger, commercial, and specialized vehicles (waste, red, and yellow equipment).
Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
Intermediate computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Strong report writing and analytical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong problem-solving abilities.
