Job SummaryAdditional information:

  • The MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) is an exceptional health and population research centre in the Wits School of Public Health
  • The Unit supports a major research infrastructure underpinned by a health and socio-demographic surveillance system (HDSS), a form of longitudinal population registration, covering a substantial portion of the Bushbuckridge sub[1]district of rural Mpumalanga Province adjacent to Mozambique that has been in operation since 1992 coupled with observational and interventional studies along the life course
  • The Wits-Agincourt Unit will participate in an EDCTP-funded project addressing the management of Paediatric Pneumonia (a significant contributor to under 5 mortality) and Antimicrobial Resistance
  • This is a multi-PI, Pan-African-EU consortium, anchored by the Wits-Agincourt Unit
  • The project will deploy cutting-edge technology (mobile phone/tablet-based Ultrasound devices) in low resource settings (in South Africa, Tanzania, and Senegal) to bridge gaps in access to medical diagnostics
  • It will also address skills gaps through development of AI tools for ultrasound interpretation as well as clinical decision making
  • The project will establish a Randomised Controlled Trial, followed by an Implementation Research Project
  • The appointed individual will be based at one of the RCT sites, either Tintswalo Hospital or Themba Hospital (Ehlanzeni District), Mpumalanga
  • Reporting will be to the Wits-PI/Project Coordinator
Main purpose of the job:
  • To screen all paediatric patients presenting to the hospital against the inclusion & exclusion criteria
  • In addition to screening, duties will include data capturing and participant follow-up
Location:
  • Tintswalo Hospital, Acornhoek, Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga OR Themba Hospital, Kabokweni (near White River), Mpumalanga
Key performance areas:
  • Responsible for screening every paediatric patient presenting to casualty/OPD to assess for study eligibility
  • Record basic hospital statistics, such as total number of participants presenting to the casualty/OPD per day/month, number of patients screened for eligibility, number meeting inclusion criteria number meeting exclusion criteria, recording details surround this to allow better understanding of the data
  • Responsible for ensuring all data collected is accurate and complete
  • Assist with on-site data quality monitoring - running regular checks for consent forms,
  • missing/unexpected data, and working with the Data Manager to identify and resolve any problems that arise
  • Maintain site documentation in keeping with Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Perform any other ad hoc tasks as required by the Project Manager
Required minimum education and training:
  • Matric
  • Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing is advantageous although not required
Required minimum work experience:
  • Prior work within a healthcare setting is preferable
You will be trained in:
  • The study protocol Inclusion & exclusion criteria
  • Basic clinical knowledge required for the assessing study eligibility (e.g. how to assess for fast breathing in a child, WHO danger signs, the meaning of basic patient vitals like oxygen saturation)
  • Basic health and safety related to hospital work
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
  • A professional disposition towards participants and colleagues
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise and maintain effective working relationships with participants, Clinicians, Agincourt employees and Management
  • Self-motivated, disciplined, and able to work as part of a diverse multidisciplinary team
  • Previous experience with electronic data collection tools, particularly tablets
  • Ability to maintain participants' confidentiality both on and off duty
  • Familiarity with the hospital environment
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work independently and under pressure
Demands of the job:
  • Willingness to relocate to enable daily work within Tintswalo Hospital OR Themba Hospital (Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga) is essential
  • Will be required to be onsite at the clinical field site everyday (no remote work possible)
  • Must be able to handle stress with tact and empathy
  • Will be required to be available outside of traditional working hours to provide support for the project if needed
