PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To direct and manage the Smelter Business Unit, develop and implement short- and long-term planning to enable the production of world-class ferrochrome. To ensure that the furnaces, pelletiser and chrome recovery plant are available and reliable to produce products in line with the corporate objectives of the company with regard to volume, quality and unit costs. Facilitate continuous improvement and operational excellence in order to improve availability, utilisation, safety performance, unit costs and to enable performance management and development of the smelter teams.

BALANCED SCORECARD PILLARS, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

  • Identify and assess level of baseline risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment,
  • Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.)
  • Manage SHEQ compliance within the Function through effective use of the Toolbox
  • Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status
  • Ensure effective safety and health programs are in place to meet or exceed safety goals. Monitor key program indicators to identify periodic need for program effectiveness review and improvement
  • Ensure effective environmental programs are in place to meet or exceed compliance requirements. Monitor key program indicators to identify periodic need for program effectiveness review and improvement.
PEOPLE

Manage the Function:
  • Ensure an enabling climate/culture
  • Direct and manage the work force and material resources to meet production targets within the approved budgets
  • Manage labour stability by minimising labour turnover
  • Labour complement in line with budget
  • Achieve HDSA/Female targets for the Function
  • Manage performance against set targets and competencies to meet production targets within the approved budgets
  • Ensure IDPs are linked to performance results and implemented as per plan
  • Conduct career discussions and implement actions with all identified talent (quarterly) and direct the human capital development programs through the Performance Management System in order to ensure continued availability of skills to effectively staff the operations at all levels
  • Ensure discipline is maintained (absenteeism, lateness, overtime, misconduct, etc.)
  • Coach and counsel people to ensure improved performance levels
  • Conduct recruitment interviews
CUSTOMERS
  • Ensure Customer Satisfaction by ensuring that ferrochrome produced meets the highest international standards of quality in line with market and customer requirements
BUSINESS PROCESSES
  • Plan for short and long-term production and maintenance strategies to stimulate process improvement and sustain production levels of ferrochrome in line with the companys corporate objectives
  • Ensure the optimum utilization of maintenance resources and implement equipment upgrades, rehabilitation and replacement plans to enhance availability of production plants to meet production estimates at budgeted costs
GROWTH
  • Manage Continuous Improvement through Operational Excellence
SHAREHOLDER VALUE
  • Ensure effective cost control systems are in place with reference to operating and capital expenditure as well as resource utilisation in order to maintain costs within the approved budget
WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES:

Skills:
  • Must have very good organizational and leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving, demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development, emotionally intelligent
Knowledge:
  • Broad experience with production, maintenance and engineering
  • Significant level of exposure to, and familiarity with, Ferrochrome production equipment, processes and customer base
Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in Metallurgical, Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline
  • 10 years relevant experience, preferably 5 years managerial experience in management of Metallurgical plant operations including in-depth experience in managing overall operations of Smelter operations
Additional qualifications:
  • Masters degree in technical discipline, Business Administration or commercial studies will be advantageous
