General Merchandise Buyer

Job Description


Our client is a dynamic and ambitious family owned and run export trading business based in Durban that has been in existence for the last 48 years. We specialize in the export of FMCG's, fruit and vegetables, meat, wines and building materials to over 45 countries throughout the world.

They are currently looking for a General Merchandise Buyer who has experience in procuring general merchandise for the export market.

They are looking for someone who has a trading mentality, who can see opportunities and who always gives of themselves 110%. The candidate needs to have had previous sales experience as well as procurement experience to be considered for this role.

Key responsibilities include the following:

Sourcing and Procurement:

  • Identify and source a diverse range of general merchandise products for export for our mixed container business.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local and international suppliers.
  • Negotiate favourable terms, conditions, and pricing with suppliers to maximize value for the company.
Market Analysis:
  • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and competitor activities.
  • Work closely with the BDMs to identify new products and suppliers
Supplier Management:
  • Evaluate supplier performance and conduct regular supplier reviews.
  • Maintaining and developing supplier relationships
  • Collaborate with suppliers to optimize product quality, pricing, and delivery schedules.
  • Resolve any issues or disputes with suppliers promptly.
Logistics and Shipping:
  • Coordinate with logistics and shipping teams to ensure timely and cost-effective export of merchandise.
Quality Control:
  • Work closely with quality control teams to ensure that all merchandise meets or exceeds quality standards.
  • Implement and maintain quality control processes throughout the procurement and export process.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years experience as a Buyer or in a similar procurement role.
  • Successful track record of buying
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.
  • Must understand pricing, claims, value chains and settlement discounts.
  • Knowledge of Exports and logistics would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with general merchandise market trends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, high pressure and dynamic environment.
