Job SummaryOur client in the agricultural sector is currently urgently looking for a Greenhouse Manager to join their team in George as soon as possible.As the successful Greenhouse Manager, you will be reporting to the Nursery Business Manager and work closely with the tissue culture Laboratory Manager and Nursery Manager.This role will be responsible for the acclimatisation and hardening of tissue culture plants under environmentally controlled conditions, applying knowledge of plant culture, environmental control, and labour management to meet the consistent quality standards of each crop.As the Greenhouse manager, you will also be responsible for managing the nucleus mother stock and ensure all plant material is maintained to the highest health and available in suitable volumes.Role & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the acclimatisation and hardening of tissue culture plants. This includes chemical application and schedules, irrigation, lighting, fertilization, monitoring, and regulating greenhouse conditions to ensure optimum growth and health of plants.
  • Meet plant quality requirements and produce plants on schedule according to the nursery production plan.
  • Managing nucleus tunnels with mother stock and ensuring best growing practices is applied.
  • Oversee pest and disease monitoring in nucleus tunnels, stay up to date with weekly husbandry tasks and timeous rejuvenation of mother stock material when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with global nursery partners, to ensure best plant health and clean stock practices.
  • Control costs and assist in annual budget planning.
  • Motivate, develop, and direct people as they work, identifying the best people for the job and assuring adherence to established procedures.
  • Recording and maintaining accurate records, inventories, and data as needed.
  • Ensure that accurate crop records are maintained for all crops and locations.
  • Responsible for staying current on all regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Must be willing to work occasionally during weekends, holidays and periods of adverse weather to accommodate emergency needs.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant science, biology, agronomy, or closely related field from an accredited institution required.
  • Experience managing a greenhouse, or proven expertise in horticulture, soil and growth media preparation, integrated pest management, plant nutrition, supervising staff, and development and enforcement of protocols and procedures.
  • Experience acclimatising and hardening of tissue culture plants are preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously, excellent organizational skills.
