Job Description


Our client in the Higher Education and Training industry is currently looking for a Head of Department in Supply Chain Management, in Durban Kwa Zulu Natal.Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Management:
  • Lead the department in teaching, research, and engagement with both students and faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Dean to establish departmental goals and share accountability.
  • Responsible for effectively executing teaching and learning strategies.
  • Contribute to the advancement and success of Faculty initiatives.
  • Develop and implement an annual student success plan in coordination with the Dean.
  • Manage budgeting for programs and projects.
  • Operational Management:
  • Oversee and supervise academic staff across campuses, including departmental support staff.
  • Work closely with campus managers and both contact and distance MDs.
  • Assign workloads to faculty members.
  • Foster a positive team culture, improving staff relations and promoting a student-focused, high-performance environment.
  • Handle matters related to leave, grievances, disputes, and staff training & development.
  • Address and resolve operational challenges as they arise.
  • Teaching, Learning, and Student Engagement:
  • Conduct 12-15 hours of weekly teaching in select departmental modules.
  • Develop teaching and learning materials.
  • Implement faculty-wide teaching and learning strategies for both on-campus and distance education, ensuring consistency across all locations.
  • Enhance qualifications, curriculum, and programs by addressing gaps identified in internal and external evaluations while keeping up with emerging trends.
  • Research and apply innovative teaching methodologies, contributing to the development and management of online learning.
  • Utilize technology and multimedia effectively to standardize program delivery and maintain quality assurance, enriching the student learning experience.
  • Develop strategies to enhance student success, maximizing pass and completion rates within the minimum timeframe.
  • Ensure a secure and effective assessment and moderation environment.
  • Participate in enrolment planning to align student intake with faculty targets.
  • Engage with students and parents, foster strong relationships, and handle escalations.
  • Contribute to academic transformation initiatives as assigned by the GCAO.
  • External Partnerships:
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships to support student success.
  • Engage with regional, industry, regulatory, and professional bodies as required.
  • In coordination with the Dean, enhance the departments visibility through marketing, community engagement, and partnerships with local government, industry, students, parents, and alumni.
  • Play a key role in developing and executing strategies to strengthen the departments market positioning.
  • Work with the Dean to promote internationalization and commercial opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain strong connections with alumni to support lifelong learning initiatives.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of a Masters Degree.
  • PhD qualification or demonstration of progress towards a PhD will be an advantage.
  • Five (5) years demonstrated experience in higher education, preferably in an academic leadership role.
  • A record of scholarship and research, and publications.
  • Lecture 12 to 15 hours (3-4 modules a week)
  • Mentor, coach and manage lecturers.
  • Quality assessment of the new qualifications Distance and Contact Learning.
  • Contribution to Student Retention
  • Supervise post graduate Students.
  • Where applicable/mandatory, professional registration with a relevant Board.
  • Willingness to be based at one of our national campuses to support the academic strengthening of the campus delivery team.
  • Assist in the development of relevant (Executive) courses for the industry and contribute to our growing executive education portfolio.
Remuneration:
  • Dependent on qualifications and experience.
