NW05/081/0424Kindly note that only South African citizens from the designated groups will be considered for the position.The Department of Earth Sciences is a small research-active department in the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU). The Department employs ten full-time academic staff members and is responsible for teaching and research in the fields of geology and environmental geochemistry. We have, at any stage, 50 to 70 postgraduate students at honours, masters and doctoral level. The Department teaches a full undergraduate and postgraduate programme to earth sciences students and offers service modules to other departments at SU. Our graduate students find employment in the minerals industry and environmental sector, both in South Africa and abroad. The position will complement the current teaching and research of the Department. The incumbent will benefit from a reduced workload in the first three to four years. The additional time available must be dedicated towards completing a PhD related to one of the Departments research areas.Duties:Actively researching and publishing in at least one of the Departments research areas;Contributing to the Departments ties with academic and industry partners;Contributing to the supervision of postgraduate students, including planning of field work;Teaching undergraduate modules in earth sciences;Teach postgraduate modules in at least one of the departments research areas.Contributing to administrative and departmental tasks as required.Requirements:MSc in earth sciences or a related discipline;Evidence of aptitude for research in at least one of the Departments abovementioned research areas;A good academic record in own undergraduate and postgraduate studies;Experience as a tutor or teaching assistant for an undergraduate module;Good communication skills in English.Recommendations:PhD in progress, focusing on one of the research areas of the Department;Teaching experience in an undergraduate module in earth sciences.
