The Junior Sommelier is responsible for assisting the head sommelier by learning about wine varieties, proper storage, food pairings, and providing basic wine service to guests, while actively expanding their knowledge to confidently recommend wines from the list and educate other staff on wine selection; often including tasks like maintaining wine inventory, ensuring proper glassware, and attending wine tastings to develop expertise.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Studying wine regions, grape varietals, vinification techniques, and vintage variations.
+ Attending wine tastings and training sessions to deepen knowledge.
+ Familiarizing themselves with the restaurant's wine list and its pairings with menu items.
+ Properly opening and pouring wine bottles
+ Presenting wine to guests, explaining its characteristics and origin
+ Taking wine orders and accurately delivering them to tables
+ Answering guest questions about wine with confidence
+ Monitoring wine stock levels and ensuring proper storage conditions
+ Rotating stock to maintain quality
+ Ordering new wines as needed
+ Assisting with wine list updates and development
+ Preparing wine for special events and private dining
+ Educating other service staff on wine knowledge and pairing recommendations
+ Maintaining cleanliness of wine cellar and glassware
+ Following all beverage service standards and regulations
+ Completing necessary paperwork related to wine inventory and sales
Qualifications & Skills:
Passion for wine and a strong desire to learn
Basic wine knowledge or completion of a wine course
Excellent customer service skills and ability to interact with guests confidently
Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
