Job Description


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze products from the various metallurgical and mining processes and ensure result accuracy
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyze the various product samples, e.g. rock, pulps, slurries, water received from the various metallurgical and mining sections for mineral, chemical and particle content as required by these sections by applying the various recognized and prescribed standard procedures, e.g. gravimetric, volumetric and colorimetric techniques, using analytical instruments.
  • Repeat analysis on samples that analytical results do not agree within the acceptable variances in order to ensure accuracy of analytical results.
  • Make up and check standard reagents and / or standardization factors by applying set standard procedures in order to ensure accuracy of future analytical results.
  • Assist in checking instrumental parameters and recalibrate or re-standardize an instrument if parameters prove to be incorrect by applying set standard procedures for that specific instrument, e.g., the AA, Sulphur analysis instruments and pulverizers must be conversant with analytical instruments and parameters.
  • Assist in performing analysis of monthly spot checks samples (duplicate samples), e.g. standard pulps, residue and concentrated samples by applying prescribed analytical procedures for the purpose of quality control and the regulation of improved methods and performance.
  • Supervise and coach subordinates and co-ordinate their activities
  • Perform regular (weekly) spot checks on subordinates'' performance in order to ensure that they are performing effectively.
  • To ensure that set standards and procedures are adhered to and instructions carried out, e.g. procedures to determine gold and calcium concentrate in solutions and slurries, which must be conversant with set standards and procedures.
  • Take immediate corrective action when doing the necessary coaching set standards and procedures and issue instructions accordingly. To be conversant in coaching skills.
  • Allocate and co - ordinate subordinates'' workload by giving the necessary instructions, training and issue schedules, programs and procedures, e.g. sample preparation, fluxing and furnace duties must be conversant with workload, methods and priorities.
  • Report analytical results and perform scientific calculations
  • Collects all analysis worksheets from analysts daily and records all analytical results on prescribed report sheets and number and typing of analyses done on the monthly tally sheet and computes the progressive total for the month to date.
  • Must be conversant with recording methods and personal computer procedures.
  • Make backups of all report sheets after it has been distributed to the various clients using E mail or fax.
  • Compile month - end and statistical control reports obtaining information required from records and tally sheets, hand reports to Regional Manager. Must be conversant with report writing.
  • Participate in safety programs and promotes the concepts in the work environment
  • Ensure adherence to loss control and safety principles and to mine and Laboratory Rules and Regulations by means of communication and spot checks.
  • Conduct weekly spot - task observations and monthly job observations as per prescribed form to ensure that set standard and procedures are maintained. Take immediate remedial action where deviations occur, either by verbal or written instructions and coaching. Participate in the Quality systems
  • Produce a quality analytical service in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and to improve its effectiveness continually.
  • Carry out tests in accordance with stated methods and customers'' requirements. - Develop and put into service methods capable of meeting needs of the customer for precision, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity.
  • Validate test methods performed by trained and competent personnel.
  • Make any changes to routine methodology found necessary to make it compatible with performance needs.
  • Ensure that all staff members receive training in quality issues in sufficient depth to enable them to carry out the provisions of the quality manual.
  • Communicate to staff the importance of meeting customer-, as well as statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that quality policies and objectives are communicated to, understood by, available to, and implemented by the appropriate personnel.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the THE CLIENT''S management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
