Reporting to the Project Specialist, the successful incumbent will be responsible for the successful build of the prototype model. The incumbent will be responsible for work on both new product development (design/engineering) as well as work on the phase in of new products into production lines producing both sailing and power-driven catamarans. Daily responsibilities are focused (but not limited to) safety, quality, manufacturing efficiency, model integration, and supporting company goals. Focus areas will be interfacing/ facilitating between Design, Engineering & Manufacturing and to drive achievement of goals such as meeting build schedule, build integrity and facilitation of training, efficiency improvement and cost reduction in project and manufacturing.
KEY JOB FUNCTIONS
Continuous review of Bill of Materials (BOM) and associated part design;
Ensure completeness of specifications issued to production, procurement, logistics and all other departments;
Investigate and implement new products or technologies, to improve the design, quality, processes and to reduce prototype & manufacturing costs;
Continuous weight analysis study of vessel throughout the prototype build (Component for the vessel)
Ensure deliverables are met according to project deadlines;
Ensure critical quality checks are completed during new part prototyping or ECR implementation;
Develop production aids and build methods to drive efficiency improvement.
Creation and refinement for Kanban (Packing Lists).
Engineering Drawings Issues and Revision Control.
Develop and support material control and refine.
Compile or update all technical documentation as delegated by the Prototype Build Manager, including but not limited to Technical Reports, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Technical Bulletins and Retrofit Procedures.
Plan, create, update, and maintain new activity lists as required for both Moulding & Assembly shop focusing on the sequence and accurate description of build tasks in prototype build;
Liaise with shop floor ME, QC & engineering to ensure accuracy of activity list;
Establish operational methods and work standards using various work measurement techniques and confirm current task durations with the aid of time studies, etc;
Support manufacturing with the implementation of new product activity list.
Update the status of Engineering Change Requests (E.C.R.) for which the incumbent is responsible, provide feedback to the Prototype Build Manager or relevant parties on progress and manage the implementation of changes stemming from the ECR;
Ensuring all administrative documentation associated with the functioning of the New Product Development & Prototype Build Department are completed, as assigned to the incumbent by the Prototype Build Manager. These include but are not limit to BOM Change Requests (B.C.R).
Ensure that all trackers are updated, including but not limited to Milestone Trackers and any other tracker given by the Project / Prototype Build Manager;
Update and manage the Drawing Registers as needed;
Perform Ad-hoc task as and when required.
Supporting the introduction of new models to production lines producing both sailing and power-driven yachts. These documents include (but are not limited to) manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, installation drawings, quality control drawings, check lists, technical bulletins, Standard Operating Procedures, and bills of materials;
Communicate relevant information regarding the rolling out of new designs to the various departments (including feedback to the Project Manager) to ensure successful implementation;
Support the Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers and Process Engineers, by providing technical input and clarity on the design intent, as required;
Support the Logistics & Stores Departments with BOM queries, workstation allocation, general explanation of part usage and explanations on expected part or material usage on new products whenever a risk of shortfalls or obsolescence may exist;
Support Commissioning by answering any technical or BOM related queries and performing quality checks during the implementation of new products or engineering changes;
Support Project Management by providing constant feedback on the status of work for new projects. This includes, but is not limited to drawings, BOM packs, and quality checks;
Support the launch and commissioning of the prototype build up to the successful handover of the vessel.
Identify and investigate areas where process/product optimisation and improvement are possible;
Quantifying the problem based on historical data;
Set up/Implement action plan, method of tracking change performance and identify responsible parties;
Review implementation and monitor if successful;
Update action plan based on feedback;
Do research on waste reduction projects/initiatives on build methodologies;
Support / Facilitate problem solving on the shop floor with multi-disciplinary teams;
Support / Facilitate problem solving during prototype build.
Ensure boats are built maintaining high build quality standards;
Ensure structural integrity through following build instructions and prescribed SOP.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum: Matric (NQF 4) Qualification
Ideal: Diploma (Engineering) - NQF 6
Experience:
minimum 2-4 years engineering / design, industrial & mechanical experience in a manufacturing industry (boat building industry preferred).
Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.
Working knowledge of Solidworks (2015 upwards), and a Basic knowledge of AutoCAD / Draft-sight (2010 upwards). Speed / Accuracy tests to be conducted in both programs.
working knowledge of MS Office package (especially Excel).
Boat Building knowledge/experience preferred.
Manage Processes and people during processes
Sailing experience will be advantageous.
Advantageous, knowledge of 6SIGMA, Lean Manufacturing, ISO 9001.
Must have a car & drivers' licence and able to travel between locations as required.
