These programmes are designed to encourage students to develop their sociological imagination, learn and apply sociological knowledge towards addressing various social issues in South Africa and further afield. Teaching in the Department of Sociology is informed by research as the academics are experts in their respective fields of research and scholarship.The Department is expanding its academic and research programmes and seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to serve in the position of a Lecturer. Candidates with a strong background or interest in the field of health or medical sociology will be given preference.The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, especially in the area of
. * Conduct research and publish in reputable scholarly outlets.
  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision.
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
  • Some administrative duties at departmental level e.g. co-ordination of module or departmental representative on faculty committee.
  • Assist with academic leadership and administration.
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
  • Masters in Sociology
  • Demonstrated experience (at least three years) in facilitating learning and teaching in higher education.
  • A record of quality peer-reviewed publications. One (1) Publication in an accredited journal or an equivalent recognised output (including significant progress with PhD studies)
  • Demonstrated experience in undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision.
  • A record of academic conference presentations both locally and internationally.
  • Evidence of integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research.
Recommendation:
  • Registered for a PhD or near completion of a PhD.
