Job Description

  • Present projects in interdisciplinary art teaching with a focus on drawing, new media, graphic design, layout, and publishing and/or any of the following fields (but not limited to): printmaking, painting, sculpture, installation art.
  • Supervise senior BA Fine Arts students.
  • Supervise Master of Fine Arts postgraduate students.
  • Assess various courses and modules in Fine Arts.
  • Generate peer-reviewed creative research outputs in accordance with the requirements of University of Free State for the specific position as well as the newly introduced requirements of creative outputs set by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
  • Participate in Departmental and Faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the Department.
  • Contribute to the department's community engagement projects.
  • Contribute to teaching development, teaching administration, research, and community engagement at the Department of Fine Arts.
  • Contribute to general departmental administration on joint course design and delivery in Fine Arts.
  • Fulfil all other administrative duties related to the position.
Inherent Job Requirements:
  • A PhD in Fine Arts on NQF Level 10 (for a permanent appointment).
or
  • Master's degree in fine arts on NQF Level 9 (contract appointment: five years during which a PhD in Fine Arts on NQF Level 10 MUST be obtained to be converted to a permanent position).
  • Proven experience of participation in national exhibitions.
  • Proven national recognition for creative research outputs, including recognition for artworks at national art competitions.
  • Experience in supervising senior (3rd and 4th year) students in the BA Fine Arts undergraduate programme.
  • An excellent academic record.
Recommendations:
  • Proven experience of participation in international exhibitions.
  • Proven experience of coordinating and managing a computer lab.
  • Excellent knowledge in art and design and design-related software applications, including the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier Pro, Audition).Five years' experience in teaching on undergraduate level in the Fine Arts field of study.
  • Experience in supervising Master of Fine Arts Students.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the mediums and any associated processes in interdisciplinary art, new media, drawing and optionally (will be an advantage) in printmaking, painting, sculpture and installation.
  • Exceptionally good international skills and ethical behaviour relating to staff, students, communities, art networks and environments.
  • The ability to work in group orientated environment.
  • Active participation in the South African Art scenes.
  • Experience of applying for funding and bursaries.
  • Experience in setting up evaluation plans and departmental year planning.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in new media, current technologies, camera equipment, and other digital technologies.
