Job Description

The Department of Media Studies is seeking to make an appointment at the rank of Lecturer on a three-year contract to start in July 2025. We envisage that the successful candidate will play a central role in teaching and research that is both theoretically innovative and relevant to media studies in South Africa, in Africa, and globally.

Requirements:

Candidates should hold a PhD in media and communication studies or a related discipline, have an appropriate publication record and have expert knowledge in one or more of the fields related to media/journalism culture and practice, consumer culture, gender studies and media and popular culture in Africa. Teaching experience is essential, while experience of supervision and of curriculum and teaching innovation is desirable.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be required to offer wide-ranging teaching across all years of study; to implement communicative, student-centred methodologies to facilitate students' development and growth; to supervise postgraduate students at Honours and MA level, with PhD students being added in time; to be research active in areas related to the discipline; to carry out administrative duties for the department; and to take part in the intellectual and public life of the university.
