In considering candidates for appointment into the advertised posts, preference will be accorded to persons from a designated group in accordance with the approved Nelson Mandela University Employment Equity Plan.CORE PURPOSE OF JOBTo facilitate teaching and learning in Zoology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to contribute to the administration of the department as needed, and to undertake research and supervise and promote postgraduate research in Zoology.KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in Zoology in the fields of biodiversity and population genetics.
  • Develop course material for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching modules.
  • Perform teaching-related and departmental administrative duties.
  • Attract external funding and provide research supervision to postgraduate students.
  • Conduct research and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals focused on biodiversity and genetics.
  • Interact with relevant industry groups, government departments, and independent research institutes to further the goals of the Department and of the University.
  • Participate in community engagement related to animal science awareness and other service activities.
  • Provide academic leadership at appropriate levels within the teaching, learning and research arenas.
  • Manage a molecular genetics laboratory.

  • Demonstrated abilities to teach undergraduate students and potential to supervise postgraduate students.
  • Evidence of research and publication, including expertise in biodiversity and population genetics.

  • Evidence of the ability to attract external funding for research.

  • Ability to work with and contribute to a team effort.
  • Proven record or potential for providing academic leadership.
  • Proven record or potential for dissemination of science, including conferences and outreach engagement.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Qualifications: Minimum of an MSc in Animal Population Genetics or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a PhD in Animal Population Genetics or a related field.
  • Teaching: Minimum of two years of university level learning and teaching experience (including lecturing and course assessment) at undergraduate level in the field of Zoology, with postgraduate teaching experience advantageous.
  • Postgraduate supervision: Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of postgraduate student supervision in the field of Zoology.
  • Publication: Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of research publications in the field of Zoology in DHET accredited, ISI-rated journals.
