Oversee the various aspects of a collaborative research project on signed toponomy (Survey of South African Sign Language Place Names, part of Advancing South African Sign Language (SASL) for 4IR Technological Development Using Place Names), including developing an overarching research strategy, growing human capacity, managing the teams research and other outputs, collaborating with stakeholders, and assisting with the administration of the project.
Assist in procuring funding for scholarly activities (conferences, research projects, etc.).
Organise departmental conferences, seminars, workshops, and other academic events.
Manage departmental research publications, including the proceedings of the departments biennial conferences International Symposium on Place Names and the Language Diversity in Educational Settings Workshop.
Supervise postgraduate students, lecture/guest lecture in relevant modules and conduct workshops and other educational activities as required.
Present papers at academic conferences and other academic events and produce related research outputs.
Participate in community engagement initiatives where possible.
Contribute to the development of the niche research areas of toponymy and signed toponymy.
Cultivate awareness and appreciation of South African Deaf culture.
Enhance the visibility of the Department at national and international level.Inherent requirements:
Lecturer/Researcher
A PhD on NQF Level 10 in Linguistics or a related field.
A minimum of two (2) years relevant experience in managing research projects.
Proven experience in organising conferences and other scholarly events.
Proven editorial experience.
Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
A good academic record.Recommendations:
Proficiency in South Africa Sign Language (SASL) or willingness to acquire the language.
Member of a national or international scholarly society or committee.Required competencies:
