in the Legal Services Division. Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel in the Legal Services Division of the Competition Commission, the
Legal Counsel
provides legal advice and / or strategic direction on the interpretation and application of relevant legislation with respect to the activities of all Divisions of the Commission; in order to address anti-competitive conduct, preparing and presenting matters before the Competition Tribunal and Competition Appeal Court with legal integrity. A starting annual total cost to company package of R 1 035 658,70 (negotiable commensurate with experience)
Please note this position is available on a five-year fixed term contract, renewable.
Key Accountabilities
The main responsibilities of the incumbent will,
inter alia, include:
To contribute to the strategic planning of the Legal Services Division and the Competition Commission.
To assist the Principal Legal Counsel with the management and supervision of section members.
To assist in and contribute to the effective administration of the Legal Services Division.
To provide timely, well researched legal advice and opinions to facilitate informed and sound decision making by case teams, the Competition Commission and EXCO within specified deadlines.
To effectively manage, coordinate and present cases before, inter alia*, the Competition Tribunal, Competition Appeal Court and High Court. To instruct, brief and manage attorneys and counsel representing the Commission.
To assist in the negotiation and conclusion of consent and settlement agreements.
To contribute to knowledge sharing by, inter alia*, participating in the training and capacity building initiatives of the Legal Services Division and the Commission
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking and a committed individual who meets the following requirements:
A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent legal qualification.
Admission as an Attorney or Advocate strongly recommended
Minimum 3 years post articles experience in a related environment. Litigation experience is required.
4 - 6 years litigation experience, preferably in civil and commercial law, competition law experience is an advantage.
Research, analysis, drafting and litigation skills.
Case management, oral and written communication skills, negotiation and interpersonal skills as well as computer literacy in MS Office packages, with high level Excel skills.
Other considerations:
Practical work exposure to area of expertise will be further considered to balance against other requirements.
Extended and/or erratic working hours may be required in a deadline driven environment.
Travel may be a requirement.
