Job Description


Role Description: Reporting to the Project Lead: Commercial & Supply Chain Management, the role is responsible for optimizing procurement processes, managing supplier relationships, and driving cost savings within assigned categories, contributing to the company's operational excellence, sustainability, and long-term success.The role will lead a functional work team of Specialists: Category Management to oversee the execution of the procurement process, ensure effective resource utilisation and meeting of group and operational procurement needs in a timely and effective manner. Engage with the team to track and monitor performance targets of optimal cost of ownership and surety of supply.The role will provide a Category Management function to ensure implementation and adherence to policies and procedures according to the Supply Chain objectives and client needs.The position is based at the Petra Group Offices at Cullinan Mine (Gauteng).RESPONSIBILITIES:Category Strategy Development:

  • Develop and implement category strategies aligned with the company's objectives, operational requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Develop and implement category sourcing strategies to maximize value across the total cost of ownership for categories.
  • Conduct market analysis, supplier assessments, and risk evaluations to identify opportunities for cost optimization, innovation, and value creation within assigned categories.

  • Support and participate in the formulation of business plans and strategic objectives for the Company from a category management point of view.
Supplier Management:
  • Identify, evaluate, and select suppliers based on criteria such as quality, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with regulatory and sustainability standards.
  • Negotiate contracts, pricing agreements, and service level agreements (SLAs) with selected suppliers to ensure favourable terms and conditions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers through regular communication, performance reviews, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Initiates and facilitates meetings with suppliers concerning contractual issues as required, in collaboration with category specialists.
  • Monitors supplier performance, including the reporting and status of contractor and contract owner deliverables.
  • Ensures good governance is being followed and evaluate against technical aspects of Procurement procedures. Tracks authorizations and contract related correspondence.
  • Establishes and updates records of all correspondence related to contract activity. Performs contract closing activities as needed.
Procurement Operations:
  • Manage end-to-end procurement processes for assigned categories, including requisition processing, supplier sourcing, bid evaluation, and purchase order management.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including mine operations, engineering, finance, and legal departments, to understand their requirements and align procurement activities with operational needs.
  • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of goods and services in accordance with established timelines, quality standards, and budgetary constraints.
Cost Management and Savings Initiatives:
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, value enhancement, and process improvement within assigned categories through data analysis, benchmarking, and performance tracking.
  • Implement cost-saving initiatives, such as supplier consolidation, volume aggregation, and contract renegotiation, to achieve measurable cost savings and efficiency gains.
  • Monitor and control procurement expenditures, budget variances, and cost drivers to ensure alignment with financial targets and strategic objectives.
Compliance and Risk Management:
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procurement procedures, and regulatory requirements governing procurement activities
  • Mitigate procurement risks, such as supply chain disruptions, supplier dependencies, and contract disputes, through proactive risk assessment, contingency planning, and contract management practices.
  • Conduct regular audits, reviews, and assessments to monitor compliance with procurement standards, ethical guidelines, and industry regulations.
  • Maintains an audit footprint for category management which includes original contract, all correspondence to and from the contractor, contract change requests, approved variations, amendments and clarifications.
People Management:
  • Coach and mentor the functional work team. Ensure that the team has appropriate skills and competencies to coordinate the SCM activities.
  • Ensure, with Human Resources (HR) support that the area of responsibility is properly organised, staffed, skilled and directed, guide, motivate and develop direct and indirect subordinates within HR policies and Group Supply Chain excellence guidelines (knowledge management, functional training, etc.). Responsible for coordinating Supply Chain talent management and succession planning within assigned area.
  • Ensure that all Operations Supply Chain reporting is aligned with standards and guidelines and that all contract related audit findings are timeously addressed to prevent re-occurrence.
  • Establish & maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound communication system with the Supply Chain Function. Takes cognisance of and adhere to Company policies, procedures and relevant legislation. Manage and report on non compliance issues.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Supply Chain Management or Engineering or Finance or related field.
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in procurement, strategic sourcing, or category management roles within the mining or heavy industry sector.
  • Knowledge and experience in Procurement management and contract management system/s.
  • In-depth knowledge of procurement principles, best practices, and industry trends, particularly in categories relevant to mining operations (e.g., mining equipment, machinery, spare parts, consumables).
  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to drive favourable outcomes and build win-win relationships with suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Computer Literate in MS Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.
ADVANTAGEOUS REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CIPS, CPSM)
  • Management Development Programme (MDP) or equivalent.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Analytical mind-set, with proficiency in data analysis, market research, and financial modelling to support decision-making and performance tracking.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of supplier management principles and practices.

  • Analyse the information gathered and compile the necessary process reports.
