Role Description: Supporting the General Manager (Finsch Mine), the role will manage and coordinate the section to ensure safe installation, proper operation, running and maintenance for optimum availability at the lowest cost according to operational requirements, organisational objectives and sound engineering practice.

The position is permanently based at Finsch Diamond Mine (Lime Acres, Northern Cape).

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Manager: Mining / Manager: Plant, Engineering Function, Line Managers, Project leadership and direct team to effectively deliver the Production and Engineering objectives.
  • Lead: Engineering, Group Discipline Specialists, Specialist: Maintenance & Asset to ensure alignment of all engineering standards, guidelines and practises.
  • Industry peers, including cross Operation peers, to address issues and share leading practices.
  • Finance Function to monitor the Mining / Plant / Engineering and Contractor Functions costs.
  • Operational Functions / Group Functions
  • DMRE / Government / Contractors / Suppliers / OEMS
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee an operational area with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Contribute to the development of annual and longer-term business plans; forecast performance against business key performance indicators; develop business cases for key activities/projects; and estimate the financial and human resources required to deliver performance targets.
  • Communicate the local action plan; explain how this relates to the function's strategy and action plan and the broader organization's mission and vision; motivate people to achieve local business goals.
  • Deliver a budget for an area of the organization or conduct complex analyses on budget progress in other areas of the organization.
  • Contribute to the management of partnering relationships with internal clients, building effective working relationships and providing high-quality professional services to support in delivering business strategy and plans.
  • Develop and propose own performance objectives; take appropriate actions to ensure achievement of agreed objectives, using the organization's performance management systems to improve personal performance. OR Manage and report on team performance; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project / account team members and hold them accountable for achieving these, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team / personal objectives.
  • Develop stakeholder engagement through identifying stakeholders, finding out their needs/issues/concerns and reacting to these to support the communication of business information and decisions.
  • Use the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions to build their capabilities. Provide training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfil personal potential.
  • Contribute to the formation of a key element of functional strategy through specialist expertise and insights, to ensure that the strategy meets business needs.
  • Contribute to the definition of organization structure by recommending reporting lines and roles and responsibilities within the team to align with the wider organization.
  • Represent the organization in professional forums in order to promote the company brand.
  • Maintain and repair complex major plant and machinery and supervise the work of a large team of employees and contractors to ensure that the plant and machinery meets operational requirements, including conformance with regulatory and organizational health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose highly complex equipment and systems for emergency repairs.
  • Execute planning activities for one or two manufacturing/distribution units with dependencies on other processes / units / suppliers. Provide input to the overall supply planning framework and systems.
  • Prepare and coordinate the completion of various data and analytics reports.
  • Ensure that all Engineering reporting is aligned with standards, guidelines and schedules.
  • Engage internal and external stakeholders on Engineering related matters, and support the operation on Engineering related engagement.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound communication system with the Engineering Function.
  • Develop, review, monitor, train and implement all codes of practice, procedures, risk assessments and standards to ensure all are in place for the effective management of safe working conditions in terms of related area of responsibilities and legal requirements.
  • Participate in a sustainable process to identify, assess and rank Engineering risks as these relate to the operation, in order to promote an Engineering and risk-aware culture. Ensure that any potential impact is understood, and facilitate effective decision making, Engineering risk mitigation and provide this as input into the ERM program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Engineering Degree (NQF Level 8) - Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years experience in a mining environment of which 5 years were post GCC experience appointed as a 2.13.3.1 or 2.13.1 in a mining environment (Shafts/Underground/TMM/Plant/Project Execution).
  • DMR Certificate GCC Mines and Works (Electrical or Mechanical).
  • Experience of planning, managing and organizing resources within short / medium timescales within the overall policy framework. (Over 6 years to 10 years)
  • Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite (Intermediate).
ADVANTAGE:
  • Management Development Programme or equivalent qualification.
