We take pride in the diversity and innovative approach of our global legal and commercial teams.We seek a commercially motivated attorney to join our global legal team and provide hands-on and proactive advice to our global marine trading business, along with secondary support for our non-marine energy supply and trading businesses.Reporting to the SVP Commercial Counsel and joining our 30+ global legal team which operate from the US, UK, SA (Cape Town), Costa Rica and Brazil, this role presents an exciting opportunity for the right individual.WKC embraces technology and efficient, flexible working practices. This role offers hybrid working, with regular attendance at our Cape Town office (two days per week), to maintain connection and collegiality.ResponsibilitiesKey duties and responsibilities include:

  • Advising on the legal aspects of all day-to-day activities within WKCs marine trading team:
  • Global marine fuel (bunkers) - sale and supply contracts
  • Marine related LNG, methanol, biofuel, sustainability and environmental products
  • Vessel operations, chartering and management
  • Financing of marine operations
  • Marine claims - in particular fuel quality and quantity disputes and determination
  • Managing credit risk via maritime liens and other structures and recovering debts via ship arrest
  • Advising on oil storage and downstream distribution
  • Managing regulatory and licensing matters
  • Developing knowledge and support relating to EU ETS Fuel EU Maritime
  • Have a strong and proactive focus on regulatory compliance and ethical operations
  • Proactively develop and refine contract management and other legal processes and contract templates to promote efficient workflows and align legal risk management requirements across the WKC Group
  • Educate business and support colleagues on upcoming legislative changes, legal and contract matters and best practices
  • Providing internal and external customer support - developing connectivity and relations with colleagues in other offices and to building direct relationships with customers and key suppliers
  • Provide strong, visible and frequent collaboration with commercial sales and supply teams, Compliance, Credit, QHSSE, Insurance, Tax, HR and Back Office and other contract management and support teams
  • At all times be a positive brand ambassador for WKC and its subsidiaries
Background and Skills
  • A solicitor qualified in a common-law jurisdiction with 3-6 years PQE. Candidates outside of this guideline PQE range with knowledge, interest and the drive to succeed in this role will be considered on their merits
  • Training and post qualification experience at a leading law firm. In-house commercial legal experience, which may include time at an energy company, oil major, trading house or shipping, transportation, renewables or industrial services company is desired but not essential
  • A pragmatic, hands-on lawyer who is able to think on their feet and find sensible solutions to legal challenges without defaulting to external counsel; ability to assess issues, take ownership and efficiently implement solutions
  • The ability to effectively manage time and workload and get things done
  • Strong stakeholder management skills - be emotionally intelligent and able to win trust and develop business relationships
  • Knowledge and a passion to assist WKC in its sustainable energy transition
  • Professional presence and integrity
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic, performance-driven culture.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
