Job Description


Purpose of the job:

The mechanical engineer is a technical specialist who reports to the Technical Director and has the primary responsibilities to:

  • Create and/or update a technical repository/library for all information pertaining to plant mechanical equipment and installations.
  • Develop and/or update and implement a process to ensure that all mechanical installations comply to regulations and accepted industry standards.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to the organization.
  • Assist in developing and optimizing asset care plans for mechanical equipment and installations.
  • Perform an audit function to ensure that the set standards for mechanical equipment are adhered to.
  • Assist in ensuring business compliance with legal and SHERQ requirements in terms of the manufacturing process.
The above mentioned activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 and all relevant Company policies and procedures.
This position profile acts as a guide to the role only, and additional work outcomes may be required to be performed by the incumbent.

Key performance area:
1 Create and/or update a technical repository/library for all information pertaining to plant electrical equipment and installations.
  • Create a repository/library framework that is aligned with Companys standards and systems (document control) to store and update all mechanical engineering information.
  • Ensure all relevant manuals and technical specifications (in particular, materials of construction) are in place and up to date.
  • Ensure all drawings (equipment engineering detail, isometric drawings, piping diagrams, structural drawings, etc.) are in place and up to date.
  • Ensure that the company asset register and maintenance system are up to date.
2 Develop and/or update and implement a process to ensure that all mechanical installations comply to accepted industry standards.
  • Review and/or set up and implement a system that outlines and guides the Organization to comply with relevant regulations and industry standards (Regulations from OHS Act, ISO standards, SANS standards, Piping codes, welding codes, etc.).
  • Ensure that this system is updated on a regular basis.
3 Provide mechanical engineering support to the organization.
  • Provide technical input to ensure that the operation is legally compliant and adheres to certification requirements.
  • Evaluate and advise on proposed changes to mechanical equipment and installations.
  • Assist with HAZOPs and design reviews.
  • Engage with OEMs to assist with asset management and care.
  • Assist with developing and proposing asset care plans (maintenance and overhauls)
  • Support the operations department in investigating major failures/breakdowns.
  • Perform regular plant audits to ensure set standards, processes and procedures are adhered to.
  • Related SHERQ responsibilities
Knowledge / skills/ Competencies:
  • Extensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993.
  • Extensive knowledge of hazardous chemical manufacturing and handling codes, preferably in a Chlor Alkali plant.
  • Knowledgeable on different types of equipment related to chemical manufacturing plants.
  • Skilled in hazard identification, risk assessment and root cause analysis
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical data books.
  • Knowledge on Operations Technology (i.e., SCADA, PLC, SAP IM and MES)
  • Experienced in relationship building and cross collaboration at a senior level.
  • Strategic management, planning, co-ordination, and control
  • Technical custodian and ability to travel locally and internationally to technical conferences.

  • Sound understanding of project management, contractor management, supplier management, change principles and continuous improvement.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Pr Eng (Mech) in a chemical or refinery plant environment, preferably chlor-alkali manufacturing
  • Familiar with financial budgeting and capex management
  • Experience in working with operational excellence and world class manufacturing principles.
  • Experience in managing and coordinating projects, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Experience in using SharePoint and Corrective Action Systems (i.e., Digilex)
Qualifications:
  • Matric
  • BSc in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering (Pr. Eng (Mech))
Reporting structure:
  • This position reports to the Technical Director.
Personal Circumstances:
  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies medical centre.
