The Mycology Division aims to improve the outcomes of people affected by serious, life- threatening fungal diseases in South Africa and the African region through public health-focused epidemiological, clinical and basic science research and innovation
Their work also stretches to other important infectious diseases
Main purpose of the job:
Coordinating sample registration, retrieval and processing at study sites, aliquot of biological material, sub-culture of pathogenic isolates and processing, labelling and accurate documentation
Location:
Helen Joseph Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital & NICD -1, Sandringham, Modderfontein, Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Apply quality control to ensure that the requisition form and sample match
Aliquot specimens as per study-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Input data into LDMS system/RedCAP
Attach label onto sample
Allocate sample position in freezers on LDMS (for retrieval purposes)
Physically place sample into allocated position in freezer
Prepare samples for destruction as per sponsor requirements/instructions
Set freezer temperatures: this may expose the staff member to liquid nitrogen splashes and freezer burn
Work in a -20 cold room
Respond to freezer alarms outside normal working hours (on standby 24 hours a day)
Retrieve samples from study sites (Helen Joseph Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital) and arrange transport to laboratory sites (CHARM and TB Reference Lab) using courier services
Prepare cryoboxes for transport
Ensure that boxes are packaged into correct transport containers and complete relevant paperwork
Ensure correct application of all policies and procedures in compliance with transport and repository requirements
Ensure daily maintenance of freezers to ensure good working order
Sign log sheets to ensure that instruments are maintained in proper working order
Ensure general cleanliness of work areas and neatness around the repository including proper storage of ancillary equipment when not in use
Perform regular Quality Control of stored samples
Respond and resolve all LDMS/LIMS issues and respond to queries from study sponsor in a timely manner
Review and implement changes to SOPs when required to ensure consistent quality, safety and cost effectiveness of repository and transport support functions
Actively and consistently maintain high levels of professionalism in all aspects of personal presentation and delivery
Apply knowledge of the organisational systems, structures, policies and procedures to achieve results
Ensure that productivity standards are consistently met
Maintain a positive attitude
Respond openly to feedback
Take ownership for driving own career development
Deliver other study-related tasks as directed by line manager and/or principal investigators
Coordination with clinical and laboratory staff at study and laboratory sites, project managers, and couriers
Required minimum education and training:
National Diploma or BSc in a Science related field
Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist/Scientist/Lab Assistant
Required minimum work experience:
Previous diagnostic microbiology lab experience including culture
Experience in receiving and storing lab samples
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
LDMS Certified user
Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) accredited
IATA Certification (shipping certification)
