Perform laboratory tests and experiments in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations
Location:
University of the Witwatersrand, Medical School - Parktown, Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Cloning, plasmid propagation and isolation techniques
Maintenance of mammalian cell cultures, polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, processing of biological samples, and in vitro transcription procedures
Accurate recording, interpretation, and reporting of results to research team
Preparation of media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
Adherence to the principles of good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety
Receiving, processing, and preparing aliquots of samples received, according to the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Routine monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of standard laboratory equipment, for example centrifuges, incubators, pH meters, fridges, and freezers
Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items
Appropriate management, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
Preparation and shipment of material as required
Required minimum education and training:
BSc Hons/MSc/BTech in Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or similar field
Required minimum work experience:
Minimum 3 years experience in a research laboratory or industry
Prior experience in molecular cloning techniques and mammalian cell culture would be an advantage
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
Knowledge of the use of chemical substances, biohazardous substances, and safe laboratory practice and knowledge of health and safety regulations
To be mindful of confidentiality
Excellent time management skills and ability to take initiative
Good communication and training skills
Ability to organize own workload
Ability to work as an individual and part of a team
Computer literacy
Be tactful and respectful
Good administrative skills
Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
