DescriptionPURPOSE OF THE JOB
Support, plan, supervise and execute experimental research projects, maintain specialist equipment and supervise personnel in the pellet research facility.BALANCED SCORECARD PILLARS, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

  • Identify and assess level of continuous risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc.
  • Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.)
  • Comply with SHEQ requirements (SHEQ Toolbox)
  • Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status
  • Ensure safe and sustainable practices are followed to ensure quality research results emanate from the work done
PEOPLE
  • Ensure discipline is maintained (absenteeism, lateness, overtime, misconduct, etc.)
  • Supervise performance against set targets and competencies
  • Coach, mentor and train personnel on various processes implemented within the facility
  • Participate in recruitment process
  • Manage KPIs of reporting personnel
CUSTOMERS
  • Ensure Customer Satisfaction
  • Ensure high quality research results
  • Liaise with technical and continuous improvement forums as well as plant personnel for trials in the facility
BUSINESS PROCESSES
  • Plan small scientific projects including prioritising the objectives and selecting the most appropriate method in conjunction with the technical and continuous improvement superintendent
  • Plan equipment, staff & material requirements for small scientific projects or sub-projects that may involve experimental work or theoretical studies
  • Prioritise the project objectives and select the most appropriate method from the available options
  • Complete all project administration
  • Set deliverables, quality standards and objectives for team members
  • Prepare & communicate instructions and protocol for work
  • Monitor experimental performance, raw data quality, project costs and SHEQ compliance
  • Compile comprehensive data sets from raw data including error checking and data validation
  • Compile report-ready results and a first pass interpretation
  • Write reports at a basic technical level using relevant templates and present the results formally
GROWTH
  • Manage continuous improvement through Operational Excellence
  • Identify technical areas of the project for further research and study to personally develop specialized expertise

RequirementsMinimum qualifications:
  • A minimum of a B.Tech in Extractive Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
  • At least 2 years experience in an industrial research environment or exposure in a pyrometallurgical research facility
Advantageous:
  • A post-graduate qualification with focus on pyrometallurgy is an added advantage

  • Samancor Chrome Systems (IMS, EBMS, Chromedoc, SAP, Coupa, MES)

Knowledge:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the research process within the context of an industrial environment
  • In-depth knowledge of specialist equipment such as tube furnaces, muffle furnaces, tube furnace type TGA equipment, benchtop TGA, strength testing using an Instron, including basic maintenance and troubleshooting thereof
  • In-depth knowledge of the application of normal analytical methods (XRF, LECO, TGA, Instron, ICP, XRD) with a basic interpretation of the results
  • In-depth knowledge of using gas mixing equipment and calibration of rotameters and other gas mixing equipment
  • In-depth knowledge of handling thermocouples, ceramic refractories, taking temperature profiles in tube furnaces
  • Data analysis skills (statistics, data handling in Excel/Python/R)
