Position overviewAISJ provides a student-centered, collaborative, and transdisciplinary approach to learning. Such an approach will best prepare and empower students to become responsible lifelong learners and competent, compassionate individuals.The mathematics and Science teacher will serve as a core member of a grade level team in fulfilling and monitoring the schools vision, mission, core values, and goals. Serving as a core member of a grade level team this teacher will collaborate weekly with the other members of the team to plan integrated units and advisory activities, discuss students, and work together to promote the educational needs their learners. Also serving as a core advisor within a grade level while serving the social/emotional/academic needs of 8-12 students, this position requires an acute understanding of the developmental uniqueness of the middle level learner and a desire to work with and advocate for this age groupThe Middle School math program is integrated and we use principles of understanding by design to develop units.The philosophy of the AISJ mathematics program is to provide our diverse learners with:A solid mathematical backgroundA nurturing learning environment which fosters an appreciation for mathematics and opportunities for discovery and risk takingAn ability to communicate their understandingA belief that there is a mathematician within themThe ability to make connections to the world around themOpportunities to develop logical and analytical reasoning skillsEmpower students with choices to challenge themselves above and beyond grade level expectationsThe Middle School science program is inquiry driven. Regardless of the content the students are studying, students should be constantly engaged in activities which increase their ability to inquire, use the scientific process, communicate their ideas, proposals, and solutions, and apply their knowledge through demonstration and/or the creation of models. Hands on learning activities and assessment that make connections to the studentxe2x80x99s world around them are essential to our program; preferably through integrated subject units.Through this, we empower our learners to successfully apply their skills in a variety of contexts with confidence and perseverance.Qualifications:Current teaching certification appropriate to age level and subject specializationsA minimum of an undergraduate degree in Math Education or the area of expertise requiredProven experience differentiating instruction using a workshop model and xe2x80x9ctieredxe2x80x9d instruction and assessment.Previous Middle School Math and Science teaching experience, specifically creating units and assessments using AERO and Common Core standards, benchmarks, and indicatorsA belief in middle school philosophy and an ability to communicate well with middle school studentsWillingness to supervise co-curricular activitiesA positive attitude and strong interpersonal skillsExpertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and which develop a sense of classroom community and trustA solid understanding of a middle school organization, programs and studentsA proven ability to differentiate instruction and integrate learningA willingness and ability to reflect and critically examine teaching practices, set goals, and commit to continuous improvementPreferred skills and experienceStrong organizational and time management abilitiesExperience with and/or understanding of:Curriculum and assessment development (particularly standards based curriculum and assessment)Experience differentiating instruction within a tiered model of instructionAssessing of concepts, procedures and mathematical practicesUnit planning using Understanding by DesignUsing relevant and meaningful activities and assessments to help students make connections to the world around themTechnology integration as a toolUnderstanding of xe2x80x98visualxe2x80x99 math and/or using models and mathematical tools to enhance instructionPerformance Responsibilities:The Middle School mathematics and Science teacher will teach five periods of an eight-period rotating block schedule. A 30 -minute Advisory period, called xe2x80x9cImbizo,xe2x80x9d happens three times per week and is also included in the teacherxe2x80x99s responsibilities.AISJ values continuous improvement and provides weekly professional growth and collaboration time from 1:45 pm to 4:00 pm on Wednesdays. In addition to the subject responsibilities, teachers at AISJ are welcomed into a collegial and collaborative working environment. In support of this teachers are expected to:Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow department/grade members with regard to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and classroom issues such including discipline, expectations and routinesCommunicate and liaise with other school colleagues in an effort to promote and establish integrative links and/or awarenessTake an active role in behavioral management and pastoral care of class and advisory groupsAttend and constructively contribute in staff and department/grade meetingsLead co-curricular after school activitiesAssist in supervision of student breaksCoordinate class activities as deemed necessaryContribute to and support school improvement plans and initiativesMaintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parentsEstablish regular links with your parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student progressAssist, as required, in the development of curricular materialsAct as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures)Chaperone annual Classroom Without Walls class tripParticipate in and assist with school events as requiredWorkdays: Monday through Friday 188 (one hundred and eighty-eight) days per school yearApplication processIn order to complete the AISJ application process, complete the electronic form.
