Job Description


The Network Administrator is responsible for the configuration, administration, maintenance and security of corporate networks and telecommunications system, including the Local Area Network (LAN) both physical and wireless, PABX and telephone system (analogue and IP) , and IP Camera systems (there such systems reside on or interface to the Level 3 corporate network).Limited responsibility and involvement in terms of monitoring and fault reporting / logging for:

  • International WAN (Wide Area Network) which is managed by Acerionx (Madrid Spain)
  • Local / national WAN (Wide Area Network) which includes connectivity to branch sites such as PE & Durban warehouses and is managed by the Internet Service Providers (ISP) to Columbus
  • Internet links and breakout , which is managed by the Internet Service Providers (ISP) to Columbus
Area of responsibility is predominantly limited to the Level 3 (including Level 2 devices) corporate network, however involvement on Level1 networks includes and is limited to :
  • Any interface between Level1 and Level 3 networks
  • IP Address management and migration advise on Level 1 network , where Level 1 networks will interface to the Level 3 network
The nature of the work and role will involve
  • Drivers License required as the role covers the entire Columbus Site area and driving to reach or transport equipment to various locations will be necessary.
  • Standby cycles for after-hours support (Network Administrator to be available on his / her standby cycle , in accordance to Stand-By policy)
  • Indoor / Office areas , Plant / manufacturing areas , work in data-centers and also outdoor areas
  • Possibly working at heights , and working in confined spaces
Internally the Network Administrator has direct interfaces and interaction with
  • All other IT Department teams (including Infrastructure , Business Systems and Plant Systems)
  • All Columbus staff as users of IT Infrastructure for telephone and workstation connectivity.
Externally the Network Administrator would liaise with
  • network & telecommunications cabling suppliers or consultants.
  • network & telecommunications equipment suppliers (of switches, routers, IP Cameras etc) or consultants.
  • ISP and/or WAN providers
Cooperation will also be required with external stakeholders / companies with staff presence on the Columbus site, that make use of Columbus physical network for their own private / virtual (VLAN) network accessibility and/or internet breakout (such as Fedserve , C Steinweg Bridge , Dispack etc)Standby and overtime work is required.Minimum Qualification:Grade 12 with an Industry certification, such as CompTIA Network+ , or Associate level certification in "Cisco Enterprise" certification stream. (CCNA)Ideal Qualification:Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in computer science or related field. Columbus MDP or equivalent.Additional vocational/ specialised qualifications/ certifications:Professional or Expert level certifications in "Cisco Enterprise" certification stream. (CCNP or CCIE).Work Experience:Network Performance Management & Problem Solving (1 year)Hardware Installation & Configuration - IP Cameras (especially HikVision) (1 year)Network Design - Physical (Switches , Routers , WiFi AP , Patch Panels , Cabling & Network Points) (2years)Network Design - Logical (Subnetting , VLAN , Routing) (2 years)Solution Design (WiFi , IP Cameras) (2years)Hardware Installation & Configuration - Cisco (2 years)Columbus Specific implementations / brands and products used. PABX telephone system. HikCentral IP Camera management solution. Network Cable testing equipment.Practical hands-on experience in:Columbus Site / area layout , Plant-specific layout , Network (Fibre) route paths, outdoor (manhole routes) , Network (Fibre) route paths, indoor (cable trays, gantry access etc) , Net work Cabinet cabling methodology (patch panels , brush panels , cable labelling system) , Telecommunications methodologies (Krone blocks) , WiFi AP coverage , IP Camera coverage & storage devices , 3rd Party on-site locations & installations.CompTIA Network+ , or Cisco CCNA (Enterprise ) certification level of knowledge.
