Nursing Services Manager - Malmesbury, Cape TownFull job descriptionNursing Services Manager - Malmesbury, Cape TownA Hospital Group requires a Nursing Service Manager who will be responsible for the overall nursing management of the hospital. This includes the co-ordination of all functions and activities related to the provision, promotion, and assurance of quality patient care, through the leadership of a multidisciplinary team in consultation with all relevant stakeholders.The Nursing Services Manager will assume responsibility for motivating, supporting and optimising staff performance through capacity building, mentoring, and training thereby ensuring that an optimum contribution is made to the successful functioning of the hospital.The Nursing Services Manager will be responsible for coordinating improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical practice. In accordance, the incumbent will be accountable for coordinating capacity building, mentoring, and training, financial and stock management including cost effective quality patient care.Requirements (but not limited to)Hospital Foundations:Promotes and restores patients health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patients care.Directs and develops nursing staff by creating schedules, offering advice, and answering any health-related questions.Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary professional staff.Provides physical and psychological support for patients, as well as their friends and families.Maintains the nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing divisions.Enforces adherence to the state board of nursing and state nurse practice requirements.Completes patient care requirements by scheduling and assigning nursing and staff.Maintains nursing staff by coaching, counselling, and disciplining through monitoring and appraising nurses job performance.Provides information to patients and the health care team by answering questions and requests.Safety and controls:Investigate all negative incidents and ensure appropriate capturing on IMS.Monitor safety standards in accordance with the Machine and Occupational Safety Act (Act 6 of 1983). Report all accidents and incidents to Hospital Manager / Safety Representatives.Ensure compliance with protocols, policies and acts.Ensure the all-clinical department are providing safe, cost-effective quality patient care in line with the Clinical Governance strategy and evidence-based practice.Ensure the principles of infection prevention and all standard precautions are adhered to implementing group quality initiatives.Holistic Care:Evaluate the patients journey through patient experience and stakeholder input.Evaluate nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes.Communicate effectively with units managers.Demonstrate an integrated knowledge of the business mission, value proposition and value chain by presenting clear action items related for nursing initiatives in response to more challenges or opportunities facing the hospital.Understand how local demands and supply dynamics translate into financial, operational and labour requirements and aligns tactical plans accordingly.Be aware of the impact of critical national and local environmental factors e.g., skills shortages, power shortages etc. on hospital conditions.Consider and integrate relevant local environmental factors into SWOT analysis and tactical nursing plans, making adjustments and improvements as needed and respond to changes.Understand nursing best in class benchmarking and apply the knowledge to audit the hospital nursing practices and identify and implement areas of improvement.People Leadership:Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.Moves others to action by translating the vision and values into day-to-day activities and guiding others to take the appropriate action steps to support the vision and values.Create an environment where staff are aware of the role, they play in the provision of quality nursing care and their value to the organization.Develop talented nursing leaders through mentorship and coaching.Facilitate effective change and conflict management.Create conditions of willingness and participation amongst teams by providing sufficient encouragement, information, resources and authority to make the necessary decisions to accomplish tasks.Manage acuities and skill mix in such a way as to ensure cost effective quality care.Ensure achievement of transformation goals as set out by the Transformation Committee.Actively participate as an Exco member of a team to achieve goals.Monitor staff attendance and / or absenteeism and ensure action is taken the policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives of Crestcare and the Hospital.Ensuring that nursing standards, quality assurance and risk management is maintained within the hospital.Implementation and management of clinical governance.Manage, advise and influence the delivery of cost-effective quality nursing care in line with Clinical Governance strategy and evidence-based practice.Implementation and management of clinical governance.Participate in and ensure the management and production of research at the site and collaboratively with other institutions.Active involvement in own professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledgeKeep up to date with the hospitals evolving policies and proceduresKeep abreast of current research in the applicable discipline.Assign decision making authority / task responsibility to appropriate persons in order to maximise organisation end employee effectiveness.Ensure technological enablement with innovation as well as accepted business processes.Financial Management:Management of the nursing budget as well as understanding the financial fundamentals of the healthcare business.Drive business unit profitability by monitoring and managing expenses and implementing financial controls.Assist in growing the revenue of the hospital.Manage all costs emanating from all clinical departments.Stakeholder Relationships:Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team-building exercises.Evaluate the patients journey through patient experience and stakeholder input.Build strategic interdepartmental relationships to help achieve business goals.Promote sound staff, patient, and doctor relationships.Foster an effective working relationship with service providers.Stock, Case and Billing Management:Ensure correct billing, stock management and purchasing.Facilitate timeous and accurate compilation of files.Identify quality improvement opportunities and ensure appropriate strategy and quality improvement initiatives are developed and measured.Efficient stock management and control.OutcomesPatient Satisfaction:Measured through surveys and feedback mechanisms, patient satisfaction reflects the quality of care provided by nursing services. This can include factors such as responsiveness, communication, and perceived quality of care.Tracking the occurrence of adverse events, medication errors, falls, and other patient safety incidents can help identify areas for improvement in nursing practices, workflow processes, and patient care protocols.Clinical and Regulatory Outcomes:Tracking clinical indicators such as patient mortality rates, infection rates, and complication rates can help assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions and overall patient care delivery.Ensuring that nursing services adhere to established regulatory requirements and standards of practice is critical for patient safety and quality of care. KPIs may include compliance with documentation standards, infection control protocols, and accreditation requirements.Nurse Productivity:Assessing the participation rates in continuing education programs, certifications obtained by nursing staff, and competency evaluations can indicate the effectiveness of staff development initiatives and the readiness of the nursing workforce to meet evolving healthcare needs.The percentage of nurses who remain employed within the organization over a specified period. It can be quantified by metrics such as the number of patient care hours provided per nurse, patient-to-nurse ratios, and the completion of assigned tasks within designated timeframes.Operations and Financial Performance:Monitoring budgetary metrics such as labour costs, overtime expenses, and supply utilization can help ensure that nursing services operate within allocated financial resources while maintaining quality care delivery.Monitoring metrics such as patient flow, bed turnover times, and wait times for nursing interventions can help identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce bottlenecks, and improve overall operational efficiency within nursing services.Qualification:A relevant nursing qualification (Diploma in General Nursing / B Cur Degree) or equivalent NQF 7 qualifications.Registration with the South African Nursing Council [SANC] as a Registered Nurse.A post basic qualification in the area of specialty [Clinical areas including Health & Safety and Infection control] or evidence of competent experience in that field, together with contemporary skills and knowledge of that specialty.A relevant business management qualification is advantageous.Compliance with the SANC code for a Registered Nurse and all applicable health care legislations.An intermediate level of Computer proficiency.A minimum of 5 years management experience within a private sectorSkills and attributes:Has the ability to manage efficiencies, motivate team and lead change.Proficiency in stakeholder relationship management between doctors, patients, management, and team.Strong and persuasive negotiating skills with a positive outlook on outcome possibilities.Adaptable and Resilient within a challenging and fast changing environment.Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices in the highly specialised field.Sound financial knowledge and ability to implement financial and business management principles.Knowledge and experience in healthcare related quality management and improvement.Sound knowledge of activity reporting for various requirements.Proficient understanding of legislative and business climate pertaining to nursing.The ideal candidate would be practical, strong with their communication skills and have a strong commitment to supporting and developing the nursing staff. Leadership ability is defined as simple care and connection with people and high in attention to detail.
