Our activities include all aspects - exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.As Oil Lab Technologist you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety, Health, and Environment
  • Consistently apply safety and health principles in all site interactions within and beyond one's work area.
  • Identify specific risks within the working area and adhere to discipline-specific plans/systems to avoid these risks.
  • Participate in relevant safety audits, inspections, and observations and address issues to demonstrate safety leadership.
  • Promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where employees can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Coordinate Analyses and Interpretation of Oil Sample Data
  • Oversee the comprehensive analysis of oil samples to assess equipment condition and identify maintenance requirements.
  • Implement advanced data interpretation techniques to monitor the status of defined faults, facilitating effective planning of machinery shutdowns to prevent or minimise operational downtime.
  • Lead Component Failure Investigations
  • Monitor oil analysis results alongside maintenance history to determine potential causes of equipment failures.
  • Perform thorough physical inspections of equipment and components to corroborate findings from oil analysis.
  • Compiled detailed reports outlining investigation findings, including clear recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Monitor the implementation of investigation recommendations to ensure the desired outcomes are achieved, adjusting approaches as necessary.
  • Calibrate and Maintain Instruments
  • Oversee the testing and calibration of all oil analysis instruments, ensuring results align with round robin control outcomes from SABS and other accredited laboratories.
  • Ensure all oil analysis instruments are regularly cleaned, maintained, and calibrated according to predetermined schedules and manufacturer specifications.
  • Manage Oil Analysis Software
  • Install and configure necessary oil analysis software on PCs that interface with analytical instruments, ensuring seamless data capture and result reporting.
  • Facilitate the installation of interpretation software on client PCs that utilise the oil laboratory services, providing technical support as needed.
  • Maintain and update the oil analysis database, ensuring all software updates are applied to relevant systems on time.
  • Train end-users to effectively use oil analysis software, enhancing their ability to interpret results and make informed decisions.
  • Conduct periodic sampling of workshop oil dispensing lines to ensure the integrity and quality of oil points.
  • Continuously monitor filter systems on bulker lines and equipment, addressing any deviations to maintain optimal performance.
  • Collaborate and Communicate
  • Work closely with the Oil Lab Analyst to provide guidance and support on interpreting oil analysis data and implementing recommendations.
  • Facilitate communication with internal stakeholders and external clients to ensure clarity on findings, recommendations, and the implications for operational efficiency.
  • Sustainability and Social
  • Execute the delivery of the sustainability activities relevant to the discipline and set out in the Life of Asset Plan to improve sustainability performance over time.
  • Contribute to developing a Sustainable Mining Plan execution relevant to the discipline.
  • Comply with environmental and social requirements as relevant to the discipline.
  • Utilise environmental and social risk mitigation techniques relevant to the discipline specified in the asset risk management approach.
  • People and Teams
  • Lead by example and support a purpose-driven, high-performance culture based on company values,

  • Foster team member development through coaching while maintaining the right skills mix within the team through developing and executing Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for all team members.
This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance HME/Plant (ENG) at a Band 6 level reporting to the Specialist Asset Health Monitoring.Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • Relevant qualification in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field at NQF6 level
  • SA Drivers Licence Code B
Experience
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in an oil laboratory and oil analysis in an operational mining environment.
  • Understanding various oil analysis methods, including spectrometry, viscosity measurement, and particle counting.
  • Knowledge of lubrication properties, types of lubricants, and their applications in machinery.
  • Familiarity with maintenance practices and protocols related to machinery and equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory instruments used in oil analysis, including calibration procedures and maintenance standards.
  • Ability to interpret complex data sets and understand the implications for equipment performance and maintenance needs.
  • Awareness of industry regulations and standards related to oil analysis and laboratory practices (e.g., SABS).
