To undertake training in GIT and liver pathology, assist in the liver transplant program and chair and present at clinicopathological meetings, in addition to fulfilling duties of a pathologist as outlined below in the key performance areas
Location:
University of Witwatersrand, 7 York Road, Parktown - Johannesburg
Key performance areas:
Attendance and participation at academic meetings (departmental, inter-departmental, national or international)
Checking patient cases seen by registrars, teaching registrars with the material available and instructing registrars to construct appropriate and clinically orientated reports
Performing frozen sections (in-house and travelling) as and when they are booked, for the week the pathologist is on call, as and when is necessary, including after-hours coverage
Instructing and teaching registrars frozen section technique
Ensuring that specimen put-through is correctly performed by registrars and if necessary performing specimen put[1]through (according to the demands of workload)
Performing autopsies, as and when required
Instructing and checking registrars performing autopsies, as to dissection techniques, interpretation of macroscopic and microscopic autopsy pathology
Chairing and presenting at clinicopathological (CPC) meetings, and overseeing registrars allocated to present at CPC meetings
Being available to consult with clinicians regarding patient cases at any time
Undergraduate teaching, in the form of didactic lectures, tutorials, and demonstration at practical laboratory sessions
Assisting with preparation, setting and marking of student assessments, tests and examinations
Preparation and presentation of post-graduate teaching sessions (departmental microscopy meetings/seminars/macro-rounds, journal clubs, short topics, national ECHO presentations, amongst others)
Undertaking and overseeing research projects in the department and with other departments in the Faculty, University or with other institutions nationally and internationally
Writing and submissions of scientific papers
Assisting with preparation, setting and marking of registrar assessments, tests and examinations in preparation for CMSA examinations
Required minimum education and training:
MBBCh, FC Path (SA) Anat, MMed
Professional body registration:
Registration with the HPCSA as an Anatomical Pathologist
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
Should demonstrate strong teamwork skills
Must be a well-organized individual
Ability to pay attention to detail
Good time management skills and must always meet deadlines
Must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
