Job Description


We are presently seeking a Power Systems Studies Engineer to join our Power and Energy team at our Randburg SMEC office. In this role, you will be tasked with handling the technical design and power systems studies for projects within the Section. Additionally, you will provide support to Professional Engineers, Scientists, and other professionals/consultants. Your focus will specifically involve leading and executing transmission studies (utilizing Digsilent and PSSE) as well as managing substation projects within the group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead small teams consisting of Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, and Graduates.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Technicians, Graduate Technologists, and/or Graduate Engineers in the utilization of relevant software tools.
  • Review and assess the work produced by other team members to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Enhance design capabilities and elevate the overall quality of work.
  • Compose technical reports that meet acceptable standards in both technical content and presentation.
  • Make informed technical decisions and offer solutions rather than presenting only a final result.
  • Effectively present and represent technical work to various stakeholders.
  • Assist in drafting responses for straightforward bids, seeking support for commercial aspects when needed.
  • Expand knowledge of the commercial dimensions of project management.
  • Foster an understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets.
  • Conduct inspections of constructed works to ensure compliance with design and specifications.
  • Oversee construction administration and monitoring activities.
  • Prepare tenders for construction, including Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and specifications.
  • Craft tender bids to clients, including preliminary cost estimates.
  • Participate in the development of internal standards and implement them accordingly.
  • Devise solutions to intricate engineering problems.
  • Execute design tasks under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, Scientists, or other Professionals.
  • Apply SMEC's systems and procedures, ensuring adherence and enforcement.
  • Collaborate with clients and municipal line departments to capture and comprehend their requirements.
  • Compile comprehensive contract documentation and specifications, including measurement files.
  • Handle client invoicing processes effectively.
Recommended Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
  • Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from an accredited university/college
  • Minimum 3 years of practical experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Power System Studies (DIgSILENT PowerFactory or PSS/E
  • Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
  • Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software
  • Professionalism
