We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects - exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Centurion, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.





-As our Principal Engineer Mobile your responsibilities will include but not limited to:


Safety and Health + Oversee the consistent application of Safety and Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and the elimination of fatalities.
Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the site are paramount. Provide an environment for on-site discipline to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without repercussions. Consider safety and health impacts for neighbouring communities during decision-making within the discipline. + Develop discipline-specific plans/systems to reduce exposure to discipline-specific risks.
Design and approve operational risk management systems to assess critical risks and monitor the effectiveness of critical controls within the discipline. Identify PUEs and monitor critical control performance within the discipline. Performance and Delivery + Provide critical technical information to develop the Life of Asset and Resource Development Plan for Mobile Equipment.
+ Break down Group Engineering requirements, service strategies, and performance targets to the site level, translate them into site-specific targets and budgets, and communicate to on-site teams.
+ Monitor and ensure site leadership's awareness of changing business, environmental, sustainability, or stakeholder expectations, goals, objectives, requirements, legislation, and standards (local, regional, international) regarding engineering conditions on-site.
+ Ensure consolidation, alignment, and integration of discipline inputs into the site's 5-year plan and provide key technical input on service strategy (resource optimisation, maintenance plans, risk management plans, and equipment performance) for Mobile equipment.
Ensure development of an integrated operational plan for a 1-month to a 5-year time horizon that stretches across disciplines, aligns with Lo, AP, and integrates all relevant technical information (i.e., Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, mechanical engineering (including thermodynamics, mechanics, and structural analysis), civil engineering (including infrastructure, structural engineering, water and waste management and mine residue management), assets management ( including machinery, mobile equipment, and infrastructure). Develop strategy implementation details (tactics and work packages) for work management. Define discipline inputs (work package details) to the Operating Master Schedule (OMS). Provide service strategy inputs to Operational Risk Management and Hazardous Materials handling (Hazchem) plan. Lead the development and ongoing management of the site service strategy and 1-year budget. Provide inputs and coordinate with the site finance department to ensure effective cost monitoring and reporting. + Ensure the development of technical mine designs to support operational planning across disciplines.
Apply input from RDP and LoAP to assess technical feasibility and translate it into a tangible basis for on-site planning activities. Ensure and monitor close linkages between mine design, integrated planning activities & information flow across operational disciplines. + Oversee the development of the Operating & Control philosophy by approving inputs and allocating a resource to own and develop the strategy.
Oversee the development of the optimum feed strategy, considering safety and sustainability, costs, and process bottlenecks and constraints. Oversee development of tailings deposition plan, effluent management, self-review plan, and QAQC plan Ensure that quality management plans are in place for data and technical documents and oversee adherence. + Review past performance to inform planning inputs and define root cause analyses to investigate critical areas as needed.
Assess monthly and quarterly technical performance against KPIs and communicate results to GM and Discipline. Identify deficiencies in site KPIs using group, external, and design benchmarks and implement corrective actions to close gaps in a defined and acceptable time limit, with communication of targets and timelines. Identify critical areas for further investigation and assign owners to conduct root cause analyses on critical issues. + Align with GM Northern Cape, Operations Managers and Group capacities on planned and existing business improvement projects and opportunities.
Ensure integration of P101, Zero Harm, Elimination of Fatalities, and advancement of Future Smart Mining (Technology, Digital, and Sustainable Mining Plan), targets and impacts targets into the integrated planning process. + Ensure enough physical resources are available on-site to deliver an integrated operational plan.
Ensure integration of discipline maintenance and resource plans into consolidated site view to ensure the site's discipline ability to deliver against targets. Consult with the on-site Supply Chain team to ensure sourcing and provision of required resources and equipment for on-site operational and technical activities. Manage and approve laboratory resource allocations (time, people, materials) and SLAs. Contribute to the insource/outsource decision-making process and approve the outcome. Oversee Contractor Management, ensuring compliance with BU/SME technical standards and Contractor Management processes (e.g., performance reviews, work planning) + Implement systems to ensure safe and sustainable execution of on-site technical, planning, and business improvement activities.
Function as the chief technical advisor to the Operations Manager and ensure enough technical support for operational Mining teams. Ensure teams deal with specific issues for technically/regulatory challenging sites. Specify and place the required staff, resources, and capabilities within the technical discipline. Ensure integration, analysis, and continuous optimisation of technical inputs into the OMS. Lead implementation of Anglo American systems and provide governance to ensure process quality. Oversee execution of process changes and change management process, including appropriate stakeholder engagement. + Implement systems to monitor and ensure on-site execution and delivery against technical plans and quality requirements.
Ensure execution of technical plans and schedules as per design Ensure that tactical planning and scheduling, dispatch, drill and blast, business improvement projects, and mine design integrate across all disciplines (both technical and other) to ensure an executable operational management plan. Ensure creation, pressure-testing and continuous updating of mine designs to inform technical and operational planning. Ensure and monitor technical risks, identify, address, and integrate them into the site risk register and escalate them as required. Review and approve month-end summary reports generated for the execution of Mobile equipment - QAQC activities. Ensure adherence to the Operating & Control philosophy. + Ensure adequate metal accounting and production reconciliation processes.
+ Ensure adequate resourcing and correct prioritisation of business improvement initiatives.
Ensure site readiness and adequate operating conditions for implementing business improvement initiatives. + Function as an on-site interface to IM and Supply Chain for specification of technical requirements and daily operational issue resolution, delegate as required.
+ Review and approve purpose statements, theory statements, and derived Mobile equipment measures.
+ Undertake reconciliations across technical & operational processes to identify opportunities for improvements.
Coordinate assessments of input assumptions and planning/scheduling processes Ensure consideration and use of insights from risk management processes and controls. Ensure tracking of key mobile equipment measures compared against plan/models and review mobile equipment performance on a weekly-monthly basis. Act on deviations from plan/model and, if required, ensure integration of learnings into the Master Schedule and site operational procedures Communicate opportunities for improvement to process owners. Ensure tracking of consumption of critical inputs in laboratories and introduction of consumption reduction initiatives. + Proactively identify technical challenges and opportunities that innovative technology could address.
Define challenges, opportunities, and impact within and beyond technical work. Actively seek expert input from Group subject matter experts who lead the solution design. + Embed innovative technologies into the on-site technical work once the solution design is execution ready.
Implement technology and manage required change on-site. Establish authorities/resources/performance targets. Monitor and measure benefit realisation. Hold individuals and teams to account as appropriate

This role is in Technical & Strategy (T&S) department on a band 5 level reporting to the Head of Engineering





Qualifications

-Relevant 4-year Degree in Engineering MBA - Advantageous SA Drives Licence
Technical Knowledge


Understanding the key drivers of the site's value chain and how distinct factors interrelate. Familiarity with the principles and components of the Operating Model that focus on Work Management and how it impacts the discipline. Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of project management. Awareness of new technological advancements and their impact on the operational activities within the scope of the role. Understanding the tools and techniques used to improve business operations. Knowledge of the safety principles integrated into the design process, including the practices of Operational Risk Management. Proficiency in data measurement, monitoring, and analysis techniques. Awareness of the equipment, flowsheet design, and optimisation techniques specific to the domain. Understanding the mineral and feed characteristics and specifications and how they apply to the domain-specific processes. Knowledge of the commercial and business drivers that affect the performance of the discipline and the overall industry. Familiarity with basic financial metrics, cost and value management, budgeting tools, and techniques. Understanding the different risk management techniques and critical controls. Awareness of the value chain management within the discipline and the interdependencies across the value chain steps. Proficiency in the leadership tools required to create a purpose-led high-performance and change culture. Knowledge of the AA Organisation Model concepts and principles. Ability to think strategically and establish asset strategy to deliver business goals. Proficiency in compiling and optimising designs, plans, and schedules that execute on asset strategy to deliver production objectives. Knowledge of the safety, health, and environment, as well as legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
